This is one of the few commentaries I have read that remembers of acknowledges that for most of US history, the coasts and the heartland held positions on the spectrum 180 degrees from where they are now.

How many remember that Bryan opposed evolution in part because he thought it would be used to justify unregulated capitalism? Or that the book used by Scopes taught white superiority to other races?

And of course there's the delicious little irony that the blowhard H. L. Mencken, whose caricature of Fundamentalists is still in vogue today, is a hero of the far right, despite his support of the NAACP? (I guess Mencken was the first of the "white fundies are savages but Black fundies are quaint and revolutionary" people.)

Of course "minorities" in the Heartland have never seemed to let cultural leftism bother them too much. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

Ping to a fellow Southerner (even if he doesn't agree completely with me on this issue).

"Liberals have a view of conservative Christians who try to force their religion on other folks, but a real look around shows almost the opposite picture. One of Ann Coulter's greatest insights was that leftists are the new puritans, who can't go to sleep at night fearing that someone, somewhere, is looking upon a religious symbol."

The truth about much of the secularism is that it is intellectually dishonest. The mentality is European Christian bad everyone else good.
There were plenty of other cultures that pratciced colonialism and ethnocide. My niece told me her teacher told her Islam was spread through trade. This could explain why she is getting a C
Every culture has its good and bad point and need to be examined without PC baggage.

They are like chaff. Unlike you believe in the Source Of All Truth and know where to look for it here on earth, you inherit the wind. Today's Left misses the Big Picture.
