He used to go up to a tree and fall over

Does anyone remember his skits about the Mafia hoodlum? One of them was called Joey Baggadonuts. Anyone remember some of the other names?
To: Mark17
Didn't he say that to Jane Fonda? Keep reading. I had not heard of that story, but there are about five versions on this thread alone.

In reference to the buxom blond named Morgana who ran out of the field during a world series game and kissed Steve Garvey, Carson (holding his hands palm up near his chest) exclaimed, "She was big!".
Ed and the audience asked in unison, "Well, how big was she?"
Carson replied, "If Dolly Parton was a mouthful, this girl would be a two-week supply".

One bit not yet mentioned was Carson doing Ronald Reagan, the one where he kept confusing the names:
"Yasser?"
"Yes, sir, Yassar"
"I heard you the first time"

I would always make it a point to tune in when Don Rickles was a guest. He was "over the top" before over the top became what everybody did. Plus, he was one of those, who invaribaly broke Johnny up.
I think the appeal of Carson was that he communicated that he really enjoyed what he was doing. Plus, I have not seen his equal, as far as ad lib goes.

Don Rickles on Carson's show was wonderful! Another one I used to love seeing on Johnny was Buddy Hackett--I can't remember any of the jokes, but Buddy Hackett used to tell these HUGE long stories, with multiple punch lines, as only he could...that was comedy...

Was Rickles on the set the night the masseuses gave Johnny a massage, and ended up getting thrown into a tub of water? I can't quite remember!

Nobody's mentioned it yet, but I bet a lot of people will remember - Carson also played the drums quite creditably, and frequently would have Buddy Rich on as a guest (a guy who could play drums like nobody else alive). Those two playing with Severinson's band were something to see, and Rich was so good he managed not to upstage his host. (Of course, anything Carson could play Rich could play with one hand).
They're trading riffs in heaven...RIP.

I haven't seen that mentioned yet--thanks! I remember seeing him play the drums, and Hub's comment, "Dang, he's GOOD!"
What an intelligent, funny man he was. I miss him already from television, and I'm sad he's gone.

Interviewing Eddie Murphy in about 1985
Carson: "So you have done very well this year, in music, tv, and movies. What are you worth these days?" (joking)
Murphy: (chuckles) "Not as much as you!"
Carson: "But you've never been married!"

In some of the recent TV flashbacks of his life, one Carson joke was a standout.
Seems the Canadian Olympic athletes were having trouble proving they were females.
So Olympic officials game them two options: either get a complete physical, or go out with a US Congressman.
