'NYPD Blue' Producer Deems TV Too 'Conservative'

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - In 1993, many ABC network affiliates and conservative watchdogs told Steven Bochco that an adult-themed drama like "NYPD Blue" had no place on network television.

Bochco, the man behind such hits as "Hill Street Blues" and "L.A. Law," prevailed and got his gritty cop show on the air, but he thinks that wouldn't be possible in today's politically charged media landscape.

"The medium has become increasingly conservative," he told reporters who visited the "Blue" set on the 20th Century Fox lot Thursday as part of the Television Critics Assn. winter press tour.

The Emmy-winning police drama, co-created by Bochco and David Milch, will conclude its 12-season run March 1. "I don't think today we could launch or sell a show like 'NYPD Blue,"' Bochco said.

I think Bochco still doesn't realize that Americans are rapidly tiring of the type of Leftist tripe that the entertainment community is pushing on the American public lately. Doesn't he notice that movies with Leftist agendas aren't making money?

Besides, in today's environment of 60+ channel cable TV and 150+ channel home satellite TV, people have much more choices in what they watch on TV and the major TV networks are losing audiences outside of very small number of shows very fast.

So how has seeing Dennis Franz' naked butt made the world a better place? Get over yourself, Bochco.

I forgot NYPD Blue was still on. I can't believe it's been over a decade.

I don't know about everyone else, but the times when I do actually turn on the TV, all I see are poofters, whores and lefties.

If being too conservative means I never have to see Dennis Franz's naked rear end, I'm glad to be too conservative.

Perhaps he just frustrated because "NYPD Blue" sucks. "The Shield" is light years ahead of Bochco, and I never miss an episode.

I like NYPD Blue and feel that much worse things have been posted on TV (ie anything on MTV). (And this is coming from a college student!)

Or the fact that HBO's The Wire is a far better show than NYPD Blue nowadays.

I agree. But that's a characteristic of liberals: they never shut up.

What TV is he watching? My TV is pretty much stuck between Cartoon network for the kids and Fox for myself. If one wanders beyond that you get Queer Eyes, Wife Swapping, music videos that do their best to offend or girls gone wild.

Best show on television!

Somehow they’re managing to get their ultraviolent, foul-mouthed brilliance on television in this rigid conservative environment.

You’re nobody on the left if you ain’t a victim of the evil right wing. That’s what brings this whining from Bochco.

Someone should promote a 12-step approach to people whose social values are destructive. First step is admitting a problem exists and is unamanageable.

Bochco was the speaker at my son's college graduation some years ago.

The speech went along beautifully for quite and while when suddenly he went on a rant against Jesse Helms.

Made no sense then and he makes no sense now.
