Teen's Abduction Caught on Tape; $10,000 Reward for Info
Friday, January 21, 2005
TYLER, Texas A clerk abducted from a Wal-Mart (search) Supercenter was sought Friday by East Texas law officers who said a surveillance videotape showed a man lurking around the entrance before the victim was attacked as she tried to drive away from the store's parking lot.
Megan Leann Holden (search), 19, of Henderson was reported missing Thursday morning when she did not return home from her shift.
The FBI (search) has joined the investigation, police said. They said a $10,000 reward was offered for information leading to her location or to her abductor.
Tyler police spokesman Don Martin said the tape shows a man wearing a long, dark coat and cap and carrying a duffel bag loitering around the front entrance to the store.
"The surveillance tape then shows Megan getting into her truck and the suspect running up behind her and either hitting her or pushing her," he said. "Then the vehicle drives off."
Martin, the Police Department's public information officer, said an East Texas Medical Center helicopter crew was searching the area for the 2002 pickup and officers were are also driving around the area.
"We are actively pursuing leads and have teams out looking for her and the truck," he said.
Videotape about 11/2 hours before the abduction also showed the suspect emerging from a bathroom and walking around inside the store.
"The tape shows him loitering in the front entrance area for a good period of time," Martin said.
It was not known how long Logan had been employed at the store. Christi Gallagher, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman in Bentonville, Ark., did not provide details.
"Our hearts and prayers certainly go out to the family at this time, but we refer all calls in regards to the abduction to the police department," Gallagher told the Tyler Morning Telegraph in Friday's editions.
Gallagher, asked if Wal-Mart policy would have female employees escorted to their vehicles at night and if so, why Ms. Holden was alone, replied: "We always stress safety whether inside or outside of the stores."
Family members said Holden was a responsible girl who began her first semester at Tyler Junior College last week. College officials told police that the woman did not show up for class Thursday, Martin said.
At Police Department headquarters, relatives talked with investigators, including at least one FBI special agent.
A relative said Holden's mother had been in a wreck while driving to Tyler, where she was visibly shaken and covered with cuts and bruises.
"She was on her way here and flipped her car three times," the family member said. "She should have gone to the hospital, but she is concerned about her daughter."
Martin said the employee's mother had turned in a missing persons report on her. He said the clerk had clocked out at 11:43 p.m. Wednesday and walked out of the store.
Fred Peters, TJC director of marketing and public information, said Ms. Holden had enrolled for the spring semester and was scheduled to attend 13 hours with a general studies major.
Police said Holden was last seen wearing a lime-green fitted T-shirt with thin, dark horizontal stripes and white or khaki pants.
Kidnapped from inside the store or from the parking lot?
Parking lot.
Wow. What a sad story.
