FEDS NOW HUNTING 14 'BOMB' SUSPECTS (Boston)
New York Post ^ | 1/21/05 | MURRAY WEISS and ALY SUJO

The number of Chinese nationals being sought for questioning in Boston's potential "dirty bomb" attack has risen from four to 14.

The FBI added 10 new names to its manhunt list yesterday, based on information from the same anonymous tip that led authorities on Wednesday to first reveal details of the purported plot.

The tipster, calling from Mexico, told cops that he had smuggled the would-be bombers into the United States, and that they had passed through New York en route to Boston.

There, the tipster claimed, the terrorists planned to detonate a "dirty bomb," an explosive laced with radioactive material. The tipster even named a specific chemical he said the terrorists were bringing in.

But authorities later realized the chemical, "nuclear oxide," does not exist.

They are stressing the tip remains uncorroborated and that no credible evidence supports the plot.

The FBI said none of the 14 had appeared previously on any terrorist watch list.

In Boston, there were visible signs of stepped-up security, including vehicle searches in some underground parking garages. The suspects' pictures were posted inside subway fare booths.

"The law-enforcement community routinely receives these kinds of reports," said one Homeland Security official.

If these people weren't on any terrorist watch list how did the FBI come up with photos of some of them so quickly?

OK, do you know this to be a fact? And where did you get the information?

One of thing that has occurred to me is that on Wednesday they mentioned the action would be in 4 days. 4 days would put it till this Sunday. And that is when the Pats are playing in the AFC championship game. Fortunately it is not in Boston, or the coincidence would be even more worrisome.

Boston? Massachussets? Home of Ted Kennedy and Jacques Kerry? No way! Why would they bomb their cheerleading squad?

I don't doubt that. Question is, who agitated to make this routine report "special" enough to get the media's attention and why?

This is getting kind of freaky.

Freaky indeed. First it was four people and now it's fourteen.

Also the authorities ask for public cooperation and then leak information to the press that cast doubt on the entire story. None of this makes any sense.

Maybe Kerry and Kennedy just wanted to get some attention. Or to take attention from somehwere else.

Nah, it's not like Kerry's the type to dawdle around on balconies and overlooks trying to catch the camera's eye rather than accept the anonymity of being swallowed by the crowd, is he?

oxide can be used in nuclear fuel. Maybe the tipster meant something like this below?

Mixed oxide fuel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Mixed Oxide, or MOX fuel, is an alternate to lightly enriched uranium fuel in the light water reactors which predominate nuclear power generation. Mixed oxide fuel is a blend of plutonium-239 into natural or depleted uranium which behaves similarly (though not identically) to the enriched uranium feed for which most reactors were designed. Relicensing will need to precede the introduction of MOX fuel into existing reactors. Some concern has been expressed that used MOX cores will introduce new disposal challenges, though MOX is itself a means to dispose of surplus plutonium.

Plutonium is a natural or intended byproduct of nuclear power generation, and reprocessing operations, initially developed for the Manhattan project for recovery of weapon-grade plutonium can recover it for further use. The United States has abandoned the commercial recovery of plutonium in favor of direct disposal of spent nuclear fuel, but plutonium recovery and use as MOX fuel is being practiced or contemplated in Europe and Japan.
