Was the president's speech a case of "mission inebriation"?
It was an interesting Inauguration Day. Washington had warmed up, the swift storm of the previous day had passed, the sky was overcast but the air wasn't painful in a wind-chill way, and the capital was full of men in cowboy hats and women in long furs. In fact, the night of the inaugural balls became known this year as The Night of the Long Furs.
Laura Bush's beauty has grown more obvious; she was chic in shades of white, and smiled warmly. The Bush daughters looked exactly as they are, beautiful and young. A well-behaved city was on its best behavior, everyone from cops to doormen to journalists eager to help visitors in any way.
For me there was some unexpected merriness. In my hotel the night before the inauguration, all the guests were evacuated at 1:45 in the morning. There were fire alarms and flashing lights on each floor, and a public address system instructed us to take the stairs, not the elevators. Hundreds of people wound up outside in the slush, eventually gathering inside the lobby, waiting to find out what next.
The staff--kindly, clucking--tried to figure out if the fire existed and, if so, where it was. Hundreds of inaugural revelers wound up observing each other. Over there on the couch was Warren Buffet in bright blue pajamas and a white hotel robe. James Baker was in trench coat and throat scarf. I remembered my keys and eyeglasses but walked out without my shoes. After a while the "all clear" came,

Does Peggy have speechwriting envy? I am surprised at her criticism. Chil out Peggy. It's W's inauguration and a godly man is going to make a godly speech. And it's America so that's OK.

Peggy Noonan is a former Dim/liberal. Some time ago she wrote an interesting (but tediously long) piece on how that transformation occurred. She seems to want to be acceptable to both sides and remain a viable punditress. Who knows, maybe she has applied for Dan Rather's job and had to prove publicly that she can be 'unbiased' LOL.

IMHO, the enemy is anyone who is against freedom. This is a spiritual war we are in, and the true NAME of the enemy is Satan. That enemy lives not only abroad, but is alive and well within our very borders.

Your posts on this thread make extremely good sense to me.
The problems of illegal immigration and of outsourcing all our manufacturing are serious ones which have not yet been addressed by our President.
Before Bush looks to ending tyranny worldwide (I wonder what his friends in the Saudi royal family have to say about that), he should open up his eyes to the very real domestic problems facing us here.
In addition, he needs to adopt some fiscal reality. If our sons and daughters are to encircle the globe to "spread democracy" (is it "Democracy" or is it "Empire"?) who will pay the trillions and trillions of dollars this will cost?
Sometimes I think our President is pennywise and poundfoolish.

Thank you, Dys. I have been baptised by the best of them on FR, and seem to still be hanging around the ole pot bellied stove. I call it "kickin' dirt" with my fellow FReepers.
If you want to get right down to it, maybe PN's gripe is really with GWB's speech writer. PN's written some pretty wonderful speeches herself in her time. I can't buy a jealousy streak though. Her editor may have had something to do with her piece.

I mean really. Who cannot understand what the Prez was saying in his inaugural speech. It was pure poetry in speech, even if GWB doesn't have a speaking flair.
I've lost all admiration for Noonan, who obviously thinks it rank or insulting to mention the Almighty, or to set our goals high.
I guess she would rather have listened to some income tax actuarial tables describing the out years of Social Security.
Really. Methinks Noonan has been hanging out with too many snootish bigwigs lately.

You seem to be quite a romantic, so I understad why you are dismayed by Peggy's analysis of the Inaugural Speech.
How man other men, besides the President, have promised you "the moon and the stars"?
