The most recent statistics I could find:
Approximately 203,900 children were abducted in 1999 by family members.
Approximately 58,200 non-family abductions occurred in 1999.
Non-family abductors are as likely to be known by the family as to be strangers.
Only 115 of these abductions were the most serious type involving a child taken by a stranger and kept for ransom, held overnight, or killed.

Great, what a relief. / sarcasm
Here's an idea. Stop hurling insults at parents who choose not to play the statistics game with their children.
"...Only 115 of these abductions were the most serious type involving a child taken by a stranger and kept for ransom, held overnight, or killed...."
Doesn't include rape. Over 2 per state per year. Doesn't account for the (nowadays small) number of kids found unaccompanied by an adult...
Worse than I thought.
So if the kid was raped and released on the same day, s/he wouldn't count as being in the "most serious type" group?
