In America's ideal of freedom, the exercise of rights is ennobled by service, and mercy, and a heart for the weak. Liberty for all does not mean independence from one another. Our nation relies on men and women who look after a neighbor and surround the lost with love.- GWB

Bush is saying that no man is an island. Essentially, if we are going to promote liberty for all, we cannot pretend as if the oppression of our neighbors does not affect us, and therefore ignore it.

I watched ABC and was stunned at the outrageous and blatant bias of Peter Jennings.

The seething rage of the left as they experience their ever increasing impotence. Kinda like Kerry fully realizing that Thereeeeza has closed his bank account for good. We should be rejoicing in their full-flowering insanity.

I see it differently.

That phrase can only imply we are headed toward more globalism, less individualism, more wealth transfer, less independence, more tax slavery, less personal responsibility, more U.N. kissassing, less America first.

That is a very, very disturbing sentence in his speech.

Taken out of context, you could interpret it that way.

But remember the man who is saying it, and how he has treated the U.N., giving them short thrift.

Bush puts American interests first because he believes that America's interests are the world's best interests. He does not look at it backwards and consider the world's best interests are America's best interests.

The UN, our political enemies, and the liberals prefer the latter to the former. I believe as the President does, that what is ultimately good for America, is ultimately good for the world. At least, this holds true as long as we are the idealistic and foolish people Americans are likely to be.

Hiya DD!

I confess--still watching the reruns tonight. It's even better the second time around, especially all the invocations, convocations, and hymns. The cheering crowds are fun to watch too. Such a handsome and classy President, First Lady, their family, and cabinet.

How are you doing? Belated Happy New Year to you! Best wishes for good health and success in the coming months for you and your family. Thanks so much for saying hello tonight!

Here's my interpretation:

Humans were created as communal creatures. We are not independent of one another, but instead, do better when we are in our family, our community, and our church.

Specifically for Christians, Jesus told us to care for those who are our neighbors. As a matter of fact, the Hebrews were given a similar command to care for the alien in their midst and for the homeless and hungry.

In my opinion, this obligation is mine, a personal obligation to my Savior. No one else can actually claim this obligation: it is not the right of another person to demand that I help them. But it is my duty to God.

I haven't found that the Government is the best steward for my obligation to care for others, so I prefer a limited government. There are a few functions that the government can do better than my family and I could do alone, and quite a few functions that are better when done as a group effort. I prefer to join with other Christians and pro-life groups to follow my obligation to God to help my neighbor.

I think coconutt has it right. Remember, the President opened his speech with, "At this second gathering, our duties are defined not by the words I use, but by the history we have seen together. "

The theme of the Bush administration has been to encourage independence from government. I think even the Faith Based Initiatives were intended to show what could be done outside of dependence on government organizations, rather than to intrude on non-government organizations with government regulations. The push for private home ownership and independence from the government dole in welfare and (hopefully) social security is definitely not consistent with socialism.

I haven't seen anything that makes me fear that the President is a one-worlder. If he were, he wouldn't have bucked the world court and the UN.

Socialism?

Communism?

Statism?

What are you and President Bush geting at?

Independence is what this nation was founded on. Independence should be priority #1 while still attempting to attain whatever goals one sets or President Bush sets. If he wants to make every person on planet earth free, healthy, driving a Lexus and living in a mansion, that's fine, but he needs to figure out a way to do it and still keep our independence and still keep taxpayers from being tax slaves.

The theme of the Bush administration has been to encourage independence from government.

How so?

Since 2000, President Bush has increased total social welfare by 3 cents of every dollar the government spends (62% to 65%). Taxpayers have shrunk in numbers and nontaxpayers have increased in numbers.

That sentence was very clear--Bush said we should strive for less independence. I don't know how that possibly could be spun in a positive light.

I pretty much explained myself, I think. We humans do better in community with others. Don't you prefer to live with a family and share with friends?

I explained that the duty is personal and owed to God, not a right that can be claimed by others. And that I didn't find the Government to be a good steward. I prefer to pick and choose who to collaborate with, rather than to have my money taken at threat of fines and prison. And without the filtering and pilfering that goes on as the money travels to Washington and back again to Texas and my home town.

Crisis pregnancy centers seem to me to be a perfect example of what is possible when citizens decide to work together to provide a service for their neighbors. Church missions are another good example. Reno and Freeh encouraging Medicare recipients to turn in their doctors for "fraudandabuse" (for a reward) is not a good example. Covering medical costs for everyone from the first dollar and forbidding and personal responsibility or choice is not a good example of good money management or healthcare planning, either.

Socialism didn't even work when the Christians tried it - and the Holy Spirit was weeding out the liars!

As to your next post: The increase is less than it would have been under a Democrat. As a matter of fact, that's all we've heard - that the Administration has cut the (rate of increase of) the budget for welfare, Medicaid, and all sorts of social services.

You can take any sentence out of the context of any speech and make it mean what you want it too. That is what the Democrats do and the reason they are out of power....

In what could only be a sign from God about our campaign, I heard "Big Ball's in Cowtown" on the way to work this morning. It was the Asleep at the Wheel version, not George Strait, but it was still great.

It was a wonderful day! I agree with Dick Morris (surprise!) President Bush's inauguration speech will go down in history as one of the "great ones of all time". Peggy Noonan is full of herself! I am glad that she usually sides with the conservatives, but even then, her love for herself
gets a little much at times. Her criticism of the President's
speech as having "too much God in it"....says more about her than it does of the President. GOD BLESS PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH!!!!

You can take any sentence out of the context of any speech and make it mean what you want it too.

Context? The context of the Bush speech was all about globalism, world affairs, planet earth for the first 80% of the speech. He did not touch on domestic stuff until the bitter end.

Being that this was the Inaugural for the President of the U.S., not of planet Earth, I would think the first 80% of the speech would be about the United States.

Taken out of context? No. Not so. The President's "liberty for all does not mean independence from one another." was at the heart of his 80% of the speech about globalism.
