Exactly
hmmm.. I'm sorry but I'm going to have to give you a B- for the partial answer.
Yes the S&S canal carried sewage (at one time). The Sanitary and Ship Canal was part of the project (completed 1900) that reversed the flow of the Chicago River (Civil Engineering Wonder at the time) - which sewage WAS being dumped into and to carry it 'away', eventually into the Mississippi (sorry all you down river people). This was initiated because of the Cholera and Typhoid epidemics that were killing thousands.
The S&S Canal connects to the South branch of the Chicago River and to the DesPlaines River west of the city. The reverse flow is controlled by locks, one at the mouth of the river at Lake Michigan, another at 'Lockport' IL. Other locks and channels (the Cal-Sag for one) have subsequently been added.
But considering your not from the Chicago area your answer is pretty good. :-)
hahaha...yep..
That was like the Tim Foli-est Tim Foli pic I ever saw. "There's bunting to be done?? Let me get my skin-tight canary yellow polyester uni on and get to work!!"
I still see the occasional dead dog and condom floating by on the Chicago River.
And it does occasionally turn green--every St. Pats day!
How 'bout that captured German UBoat at the museum?
Was that caught on Lake Michigan (Canadian nazi sympathizers) or the Chicago River?
Axle Foley is on the case.
Heh. Last night I dreamed I drank the world's largest margarita. When I woke up this morning, there was salt around the rim of the toilet...

Kerosene is the best fuel for cooking over or starting a grill. I just love the added flavor of Kerosene on my food. It also cooks the food instantly, ever notice how fast the food becomes black almost instantly.
Dip a Marshmallow in Kerosene and ignite it over a kerosene flame for a real dining treat. PLEASE don't swing flaming Marshmallows around on the end of a stick as they may fly off and land on someones face. I did that once, and the kids parents were none to happy about my little accident.
I would even expect legal consequences for such an accident might ensue in todays society of litigation. Please be very careful how your children behave when using dangerous cooking standards in todays society. Parents of today are 100% RESponsible for the pure ignorance of their children in todays world.
Kerosene flavored hot dogs: MMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..............
It's a long time ago, but I lived in the Chicago area from 1968-73, and I think the river caught on fire. The joke was that the river was a fire hazzard.
Apparently it was carrying a fuel slurry that need to be kept heated to keep it from solidifying. They were about 3 miles from their destiniation. Last I heard one person died.
I've lived here about 3 months now.
