One point of satisfaction for Thune: His mentor and personal hero, former Republican U.S. Sen. Jim Abdnor from South Dakota, who lost a re-election bid to Daschle in 1986, was in Thune's headquarters the evening of Nov. 2 to witness Daschle's demise. He also got his start in politics because of Abdnor, as one of his aids. Glad I'm not the only one who got the sweet irony of Thune beating Dashle in light of the fact that Dashle beat Abdnor.

Sharing office space – in a sense – is an irony because during a hard-fought political campaign, Thune and Daschle shared very little, especially in terms of politics.

It would be ironic if they were in fact sharing office space, but they are not. So I'm not sure what the point of that sentence is.
