WASHINGTON An atheist lost his bid Wednesday to have the Supreme Court bar the saying of a prayer at President Bush's inauguration.
Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist denied Michael Newdow's claim that a prayer at Thursday's ceremony would violate the Constitution by forcing him to accept unwanted religious beliefs.
In so doing, Rehnquist also rejected Newdow's request to recuse himself from the case because he is scheduled to swear in Bush. Newdow had argued that Rehnquist had become a willing fixture in a government ceremony "infused with sectarian Christian religion" and thus had a conflict of interest.
Rehnquist's order came without comment.

His next appeal will be to God. :~)
One day to go and the party's already started!
Too bad they couldn't have fined him for wasting the court's time.
One New York minute.
Next, Newdow will demand to have the Declaration of Independence censored in all classrooms....ooops. Already been there, done that....
I still don't understand how he has the gall to
make such appeals to the courts with his own
background as a diploma-mill "reverend!"
"...Rehnquist's order came without comment...."
Except to FINALLY tell Newdow to S T F U!!!!!
Indeed, sanctions were in order.
Looks like Rehinquist is feeling good enough to do the honors!
Michael Newdow is a reject! Thank God the adults are still in charge at the Supreme Court.
Newdow needs to get a life. Note to Newdow: You are fighting a losing battle, move on with your life you sorry loser.
"One day to go and the party's already started!"
Let the guffaws begin!
How much repeated rejection do you think Newdow can take?
I'm sure Rhenquist and Bush will be thinking of him as the President puts his hand on the BIBLE to take the oath of office and of course it ends with -GASP!- the words "so help me God!".
How many times does this idiot have to be rejected before he gets the message?
America ping news information Thank you
denied....denied...denied ! :> :'} :.}
Newdow deserves no comment. The man is a flake with fake degrees, fake clergy licenses, no human sympathies, and no brains. It's a sad comment on the judiciary that the 9th Circuit Court even agreed to hear his case. And its a sad comment on the media that they have made this pathetic loser into a famous man.
It recalls Andy Warhol's comment, toward the beginning of the countercultural revolution, that everyone is entitled to his 15 minutes of fame.
Newdow's 15 minutes are up. The press just hasn't realized it yet.
Until he is sanctioned for vexatious litigation.
