We talked about this while I was at home in Alabama over Christmas. My daddy is 100% behind Roy Moore and believes that the whole election will turn on what happens with the Hyundai plant that Riley built with a mortgage on the state for the next 10,000 years or so.

I believe that it will come down to how many Northern Liberals get involved to come to Alabama and sneer at Roy Moore and Alabama (not unlike that idiot from Wisconsin did while I was there -- coming into Greenville and calling the people shack dwelling hay balers who only wear shoes on Sunday. If anyone gets a hint that the Northerners favour Riley, Moore will get in like a shot.

While I agree with your tag line that "demorats are never the answer" neither is a shyster like Moore who refused to obey the laws he was sworn to uphold.

I think defying the federal courts is something to be encouraged.

I don't think most Alabamans give a darn whether he defied federal courts or not.

That is NOT TRUE. I care a great deal about his defying of the Federal Court. That's why I like him!

Moore was sworn to uphold the Alabama Constitution. That was what he was doing.....I hope he continues.

Judge Moore could very well be a spoiler, much as Perot was in 1992 and 1996 and George Wallace almost was in 1968. Whether he becomes one depends very much on the extent Bush addresses the concerns of his core constituencies and who the GOP nominates in 2008.

We'll have to wait until the State of the Union address to see in what direction the second Bush administration goes. However, if Bush runs a centrist administration in his second term, with little positive action on tax reform, regulatory reduction, and illegal immigration, and nominates a William Kennedy - Sandra O'Connor clone to fill the almost certain vacancies on the Supreme Court, the core GOP constituencies of secular conservatives and the Christian Right will become restive. If the Supreme Court validates homosexual marriage or something else equally offensive in the next three years, like forcing the Boy Scouts to accept atheist and homosexual scouts and adult leaders, the evangelicals will desert the GOP camp en masse and the party will lose the ground it gained among white Catholics in the last two elections.

At best, Judge Moore, running on a third party ticket and funded at the grass roots, may get 10-15% of the vote. But that, or even 4-5%, would be enough to doom the Republican ticket, especially if the nominee were Giuliani, McCain, or Colin Powell. (With such a man heading the ticket, no social conservative favorite - Ashcroft, Santorum, Jeb Bush - could make the GOP ticket palatable to the right wing.) All of this will give Hillary Clinton or someone of her ilk the keys to the Oval Office four years from now.

The best way to keep conservatives down on the GOP farm is for the President to run a conservative Administration.
