Bid seen weakening to ban gay marriage

Amendment foes may get majority

By Frank Phillips, Globe Staff | January 18, 2005

The slim majority that supported the proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage last year has been thrown into doubt with the recent resignations of three legislators who oppose gay marriage and a net increase of two gay-marriage supporters in the crop of newly elected legislators.

With the start of the new legislative session, a Globe analysis indicates that supporters of gay marriage appear to be gaining ground in their effort to defeat the proposed amendment to ban same-sex marriage. The Legislature voted 105 to 92 for the amendment in March, but it would have to pass one more roll call to reach the 2006 ballot for voter consideration.

One leading gay-marriage opponent said he sensed a shift against the constitutional ban.

"I will not be surprised if the Legislature defeats that amendment," said Ron Crews, former president of the Massachusetts Family Institute and a leader in the social conservative movement to ban same-sex marriages in Massachusetts. Some gay-marriage opponents are against the amendment because it would create civil unions for gay couples in addition to banning marriage.

Gay-marriage opponents who want to pass the ban need 101 votes in the 200-member Legislature. They cleared that hurdle by just four votes in March.

I had high hopes for this year. Mitt Romney ran a slate of Republicans in most districts. Sadly, that's a real accomplishment here.

But with Kerry at the top of the ticket, Republicans actually lost seats. That's pathetic, like the Democrats in Utah or Idaho losing seats. The Democrats have the largest majority any party has had in the State House since something like the 1850s when the chief party was the Know-Nothings. The Republican Party can't get much deader in the Bay State.

"The Republican Party can't get much deader in the Bay State."

I am trully sorry to hear that. Not that the Repubs are an extreme minority, but that the people of the state have no real voice. Hard to believe Mass. was sort of the birth place of American freedom.

Please note the source. The Gay paper thinks as the media does, if they say it is so, it is so, and everyone will believe it. Don't you believe a word of it!!

They wish!!!

Yes we do, and did just that, but they tied it up in committee. Illegal, but they did it. That's why Finneran is gone.

Everything that they have done regarding this matter in MA has been done illegally. That's why they are trying to remove the Judges who imposed it on the state.

Actually, given that the article is about the net gain in pro-marriage state reps, who are directly elected, it seems that the voters are having a say. Did you think Mass. voters would say anything different?

Excuse me, but you are wrong. and so is the article, in fact they gained no seats. We did. You mustn't believe what you read in the globe.

Yes, we do have an initiative petition process and this particular petition was delivered to the legislature with more than enough signatures at least 3 years ago. The legislature ignored it.

You tell em Andy'smom

Oops... meant Sodomachusetts. Any way, the entire state has the singular distinction of not having one red county in it. America doesn't want to embrace the Bay State's anti-family values, period.

The new speaker is anti-ammendment.

Actually DiMasi is heading up the petition to remove the Judges!

Heck, I wouldn't vote for that "ban." It doesn't ban gay marriage. It bans the use of the word "marriage" by gay couples who can then only marry under the term "civil union." It's worthless.

Now that I agree with, we need one that bans both.

He actually has more power than the governor.

If you read the constitution Romney could have stopped it, he didn't. WHich is why I hope he doesn't run in 08, I couldn't support him.

How depressing! The gay agenda just moves forward, getting government to promote homosexual activity, and nobody cares!

Don't say we don't care. please? we do care, we are sick about it. Do you know millions pour into this state, in each district, to get these gays elected and their agenda into our state? And from all over the country! Add a intimidation at election sites, and there is very little we can do. We don't have all the Soros and Kennedy and Moveon.org money.

In Oklahoma an initiative petition goes up to the people for vote, the legislature cannot stop it. If approved, then it ammends the constitution. It appears that MA does not trust the people to ammend the document that governs them.

In OK you don't have the mob running the state, you don't have Judicial Tyranny run amuck, and you don't have Kennedy Kerry and Barney, just to name a few, oh we have sooooo many others.

I hope so, I contribute and get updates from article 8. They are trying, but the resistance doesn't even get press coverage, it's completely blacked out.

We should have another Boston Tea Party, refuse to pay our taxes until we have some representation LOL

Hadn't heard that, thanks for pointing that out. It will be interesting how the vote turns out. They house was barely able to pass the gay marriage ammendment, tossing 4 judges out will he a monumental effort. But it would be the proper solution.
It's odd he is going this route as he was against the gay marriage ammendment.
