[Maryland] General Assembly

The national debate over same-sex unions lands squarely in Maryland this month, as legislators and lobbyists mobilize for a series of noisy battles over how gay couples will be treated in the eyes of state law.

Lawmakers on both sides of the issue are preparing legislation that would add same-sex unions to the roster of contentious matters facing the 2005 General Assembly session.

With a Sun poll showing Marylanders divided, but leaning against civil unions for same-sex couples, gay-rights activists and opponents are organizing supporters for a political show of force Jan. 27 in Annapolis....

On the 10 Christian radio stations in the state where the group airs its broadcasts, it is urging listeners to join the Jan. 27 rally.

Organizers predict the "marriage protection" gathering will attract tens of thousands of supporters to put pressure on the legislative committees that bottled up a similar measure last year.

"People in the state ought to be able to decide for themselves," said Del. Charles R. Boutin, a Republican representing Harford and Cecil counties who plans to sponsor the amendment again this year.... Boutin's measure is one of at least three proposed restrictions on same-sex unions being drawn up. Another would bar gay couples from adopting children, while a third would reiterate the 1973 law defining marriage and ensure that Maryland will not recognize gay marriages legalized out of state.

In July, nine gay couples filed a lawsuit in Baltimore Circuit Court challenging Maryland's state law banning gay marriage. ...that lawsuit... motivated social conservatives ...Del. Donald H. Dwyer Jr., an Anne Arundel Republican, and Doug Stiegler, executive director of the Family Protection Lobby, as well as clergy to begin scouting for support last fall...

"...because we just haven't had enough debate on gay marriage in recent days..."

LOL! More to the point, the national elections did nothing to stop gay activists from trying to push over the states that didn't have election referenda on the question, including Maryland. The ACLU filed suit in MD in July 2004, and the suit is expected to be heard in March. If more arrogant judges decide to make Maryland the next Massachusetts, there will be no end of debate, but it will be too late.

I agree. For all these reasons, and more, a constitutional amendment is needed to put a stop to the homosexual marriage movement. Nine states including Maryland are currently being sued about marriage. The activists hope that a few will join Massachusetts in legalizing homosexual marriage. Then they will attack in the Federal courts and say, see, look, a lot of states have legalized homoseuxal marriage. I hope they can interrupt their strategy. The Federal Defense of Marriage Act being overturned is the ultimate goal. The gays in Mass. are only 1/2 married at this point because they're single under Federal law. Stay tuned.

"The Federal Defense of Marriage Act being overturned is the ultimate goal."

Great post. I agree; and it would be just another nail in the coffin of "one nation under God" if the homosexual movement succeeds in redefining marriage in federal law.

A strong republic is one in which rights proceed from God, not from courts. And to repudiate the genders designed by God is to cave in to the Nanny State.
