My house is on Lake Superior about 20 miles northeast of Duluth. The lake serves as a heat sink this time of year. It was -21F at my house this AM but when I drove up to the highway, less that 1/2 mile away, it was -37F.

Bad day to be on the Rail Road...when I worked for the old Soo Line in Superior...the pull aparts and derailments were bad this time of year...getting called out for in the middle of the night even worse...
Hundred below wind chills do bad things to machines as well as animals and men.....
How it can shrink rail is truly amazing...
I was originally planning to do the cross country ski tour at Boulder Lake (near Duluth) on Sunday. At 0530 I checked the Weather Channel website. Duluth was -20, -39 wind chill. So it must have been much colder at the race venue. I decided to stay in St. Paul that day.

johniegrad, is that your ATV? Works nice for plowing, doesn't it? That pic looks pretty much like our driveway. We're about 100 miles NW of Duluth and I envy your lake warmth (LOL); our thermometer read -36 this morning (Tuesday). Warmed up this afternoon and has been snowing again.
