The only Lilly document specifically mentioned in the BMJ article was a 1988 report that stated that 38 percent of depressed patients taking Prozac during clinical trials experienced side effects like agitation, insomnia and nervousness, a rate twice that of those taking a placebo.

I'm impressed. I think Pittman has a good chance of being found not guilty. IIRC, he had no motive.

This is another case of an effective drug ruined by unchecked marketing. According to the raw data which has come out in the past few years, this drug is a Godsend to some, a placebo to a substantial portion and a nightmare to a small minority. The fact is it can be extremely dangerous as any extremely powerful drug is. Show me a drug without side effects and I will show you a worthless drug. That being said, it is criminal to hide or minimize these side effects because they have ruined lives and many doctors are completely sure they aren't attributable to the drug.

If you experience the side effects mentioned you are considered bipolar type 2. Your bipolar condition has been "kindled" by the antidepressant. You will have some preening arrogant bastard explain it is not the drug causing your husband/wife/daughter/son/etc to go crazy, sleep with everyone, max out the credit cards, get incredibly agitated and violent etc. You will then be prescribed a "mood stabilizer" and later lithium if that doesn't work. From mildly depressed to two or three incredibly powerful psych drugs in a few weeks or a month. The person you knew is then in real trouble because it may or may not work. If they get stone faced and withdraw watch out.

The people who made the decision to hide this data need to be jailed and sued until their family is destitute. The chaos they have caused is done and can't be fixed. They must be made object lessons. They are as guilty as the person who went crazy.
