Re: pennies. Yep, this excess cost is called negative seniorage, and it's why the Mint went to zinc in 1982-3. Current pennies are zinc with a tiny cladding of copper.

The Mint, overall, is still highly profitable. They profit by about 17 cents on each quarter, all costs paid, for example.

Commodities in some form deserve a place in your portfolio, in my opinion, for the rest of this decade, at least.
