Viet Nam was the original JFK's Viet Nam, though it overwhelmed Johnson and Nixon. Iraq does seem more in the interests of the US to start large scale reform in the ME (not to speak of the fact that N VN did not directly attack the US mainland, though they were messing with their neighbors). Less oil in SE Asia. Bush still has a good chance on effecting lasting net positive change in the ME and has certainly directed atention away from the US homeland.
