The weekly wash

THE NEWS TRIBUNE

Last updated: January 15th, 2005 02:40 AM

NOT TOO FAST: Newly minted Gov. Christine Gregoire is putting up a brave front, but deep down she has to be feeling a little like the office temp who doesn’t know whether she’ll have a job in a few weeks.

Gregoire spent Friday interviewing job candidates and hopes to have key positions in her office filled soon.

Some advice to those who accept any of those jobs: Don’t burn your bridges at your current workplace, and don’t sell your house and buy another in Olympia. Rent a place and wait for the state Supreme Court to give the all-clear.

Tacoma has been playing second fiddle to King County and Seattle for decades, so I'm not surprised the TNT came out with something like this.

However, it is quite telling for a major newspaper to even admit to their being a 'revote debate' in the public consciousness. Public opinion seems to be listing our way.

It's unbelievable that Gregoire and her gang can sleep at night.

A stolen election is one thing; a clumsily stolen election conducted in broad daylight in front of the whole electorate is quite another.

One would have to have a Huey Long charm to pull it off successfully. Gregoire ain't no Huey Long. Whichever way it goes, she is tainted toast from here on out.

Well put. I said that recently. If she 'wins,' it'll be one of the most catastrophic administration this state has seen as years. She knows she's toast. The Dems know she is and they are since they will be forced to push through the highest tax increases ever seen in this state. They'll know a Rep. will win the next election, so they'll get as much through as they can...just like Locke floating the idea of pushing 1 billion in additional taxes in his last year....just for the heck of it. It's a nice round number, so why not?

Yes, and the damage they do might be irreparable.

These people are thugs. They need to be out of power NOW!

Not only is she toast, but at least half of the dems I know said they'd vote for Rossi in a revote because of the way the dems have handled this mess.

a hand recount when the tiny margin of victory is well known seems to be a situation begging for shenanigans.

Well .. there's always a RECALL!!

What a great idea! Just because they got away with stealing the last election doesn't mean they'll ever do it again!

(/sarcasm)

When it comes to echoing the public sentiments, Washington state's birdcage-liners are the LAST to recognize or acknowledge. That is what has made them irrelevant.

What I found even more interesting was the framing of their next observation:

"VOTE EARLY AND OFTEN: The state Republican Party has been searching high and low for evidence that the 2004 gubernatorial race was so badly botched that it needs a do-over. High on the list of alleged goofs: Some felons whose right to vote had not been reinstated cast ballots.

One group the Republicans don’t seem too interested in, however, are folks with second homes in other states. How many of them do you suppose voted both in Washington and, say, in Riverside County, Calif. – home to Palm Springs and Palm Desert?

Other states have found that it’s not unusual at all for people with second or temporary residences to vote in both places. There’s nothing – except federal law and individual honesty – to prevent people from double-dipping at the polls because states don’t exchange voter registration lists.

Although the problem of duplicate voting isn’t likely to be addressed during this revote debate, it’s a good issue for both parties to focus on in the future. After all, democracy is all about one person, one vote."

Notice the subtle linkage of potential double-voting (TOTALLY unsubstantiated!) to the Republican party? Then wrap it up with an innocuous "both sides should look out" and there ya go - ain't we impartial?!

Oh, by the way, when did you stop beating your wife?
