I love this line. He is one smart and brave young man with a promising future. I hope some good university sees his worth and grabs him.
You know, five or ten years ago, I would have agreed with you.
But with recent events including the election, Rathergate, and the death or mortal wounding of the MSM, I think what we have here is a whole new ball game.
I think this prof is going down. Fired or annoyed out of his present position. And the creeps in his department and in other departments around the country who think like him suddenly have things to think about when they wake up in the middle of the night.
Like what they are going to do when tenure is abolished nationwide in a few years.
Good comment, though. Five years ago, I would have entirely agreed.
Agree, this kid is going to surface in the future. He is good.
You went to one horrid university. I am ashamed that it was a Catholic one (I am Catholic).
Could we really expect better from a man named Woolcock? No doubt his wife understands the source of the frustration he took out on his unfortunate Kuwaiti student.
This is all contention, it's hearsay. How can you lambast this professor without hearing both sides of the story. The essay contains two citations, one of which has no bearing on the topic at hand, and neither of which are attributed correctly. I would fail this kid too, he engaged in plagiarism. It's written poorly, and has no evidence to back his views up. You cannot convict this professor with only hearsay to back it up, and even so, it's at most a D paper.
Ummmmm...is this you Woolcock? 1-16-05? And if so, why would you send the student to a psychologist?

Don't be ridiculous! That's exactly what the assignment was. It was an essay, assigned by the instructor. Mr. Al-Qloushi chose one of the topics on the instructor's list, and he stayed on topic. The instructions did not say to tell lies that make the instructor happy. The instructions said... Wait, upon review, the instructions did say to lie. Nevermind.
The fact that the kid is an Arab puts Woolcock in an exquisite bind, since leftist lemmings currently have Arabs in the "oppressed" category. This story should be fun to follow.
Alright, whats the other side of the story? What was plagiarized here?
Methinks the "Con" in "UltraCon" stands for "constipated."
Hmmm...a singularly poorly written essay, packed with non-sequitors, irrelevancies, and bad grammar. Al-Qloushi's youth, foreign roots and relative unfamiliarity with the English language mitigate the flaws in his logic and learning somewhat, but the essay reveals him to be less than a intellectual heavyweight in any case.
Hit and run DUmmy. I'd request a Zot, but it appears you're done posting anyway. I'd tell you to crawl back under your rock, but it looks like you already have.
I disagree. The left loves Arabs that hate America, not ones who love America. The left wants us to believe all Arabs hate us because we're so terrible. They don't take kindly to anyone who blows a hole in that theory. They love all immigrants, foreigners, women and minorities; as long as they hate America and refuse to be good citizens. (Think Condi Rice or Rodney King; Mel Gibson or Michael Moore; Clarence Thomas or Bill Clinton; etc...) This doesn't create any kind of paradox for liberals. They won't think twice about throwing this guy into the shredder, so to speak.
It's not the arena to "make a statement"
It's obvious he was not trying to "make a statement".
He was doing his assignment and doing it honestly. Thats a good deal of what is wrong with schools these days. To he!! with truth and integrity and just do what you have to do like mindless spineless sheep.
Where else do you pay $30K - $40K for something and let THEM dictate what you get?
Since the student only made brief mentions of that issue and failed (imo) to argue the point, I too, would give a failing grade on that basis alone. There was no real thought involved and a parroting of jingoisms---.
But then again Foothill College is a Two year Community College. No real degree to be obtained. Its was pretty fru-fru ten years ago when we used to sell on campus there...A beautiful campus too--I might add.
But to get back to the point, I think the student failed to adequately support his side of the argument and thus deserves a failing grade. If the prof had stated as such, then no foul. But the Instructors omments were over the edge and the refusal to grade the essay indicts the professor. THusly, he deserves the ridicule being heaped upon him.
re: This guy was threatened to have his VISA taken away
What a depraved country we've become. Time was if you displeased the powers that be they would send you packing back to your home country. That was the patriotic way, but now we use capitalist techniques on everyone and they threaten to cancel your credit/debit card. I am as strong a supporter of capitalism as the next guy, but there are just some things that it can't or shouldn't be expected to solve. I say let him keep his Visa card, in fact up his credit limit just to teach the professor a lesson! In fact, let's just get him a Master Card and he can tell the professor to take a long walk on a short pier!
READ THE PIECE! The fellow was not flunked because of bad writing. He was explicitly flunked because he did not assume the correct attitude. Or is it your attitude that those attitudes needed punishing but it should have been done on the quality of the writing? But then how would the fellow have known that it was his views that were being punished, which seems to be the most important part of the professor's judgment of the essay.
Taking your objections into account it is apparent that the professor was not teaching content or method, but attitude only, and that he is also incompetent to judge the writing skill of his students. The professor would be, then, all around incompetent to teach much of anything and his job is solely that of political commissar.
Your defense of the professor shows that the academic situation at Foothills is possibly much worse than immediately apparent from the present controversy.
