You may feel free to say Bev Carter is a Republican, you may also believe in UFO's. In the last 5 years, she has told me twice, in public, that she voted for Perot in 92 and Clinton in 96. Great Republican there.

She is NOT conservative and was an early backer of EMILY'S List in this area. If you're that liberal, in Fort Bend County Texas, you're in the wrong damn party. For years she has attacked Comm. Meyers, Sugar Land conservative councilmen and is on the liberal side of every issue. She HATES Christian Conservatives.

It's a sad fact to know that Fort Bend County is serviced by a "newspaper" that is actually crappier than the Houston Chronicle but Bev has managed to do just that! That's a feat that even the New York Times couldn't accomplish.

I moved away from Ft. Bend County in 1982 -- 23 years ago -- so I am not up on what Bev Carter is doing now. She WAS a Republican then -- although not a conservative one, as I stated before. Actually, she is not conservative about anything and never has been!

Bev is an interesting person -- gutsy, brash, flamboyant, and not afraid of anything. She built her own business from scratch against some very great odds and through some very great sacrifices. Eventually, she and the Star ran 2 or 3 other local newspapers out of town when everyone said she wouldn't last a year. She could always be counted on to take the opposite tack of the conventional position -- she always bucked the status quo. You could always count on Bev to stir things up.

In 1980, Bev was a natural friend to Republicans (although not a patsie to their ideas) because the Republicans were also bucking the status quo. Remember, Democrats controlled all County offices and most offices in the various cities too. There was a handful of Republican Councilmen in Missouri City and one Republican JP, that I remember. All other offices were controlled by the Dems. It was a surprise when Tom DeLay was elected to statewide office because that seat had always been held by a Democrat. Bev's Republican friends did a lot to put The Southwest Star (as it was called in those days) on the map by feeding her stories that the other papers wouldn't run because they were unwilling to rock the boat.

It is not for me to explain or defend Bev Carter, but perhaps she is crossing swords with the Republicans and DeLay today because NOW they are in the majority in FBC. They definitely were NOT the majority in 1980, and now they are a choice target.

FWIW, I think that she should never have endorsed DeLay's opponent, but it is classic Carter!
