It's believable to me. To fly out of State College PA, when USAir was the only choice, was routinely $1200 and up. Even a year ago when I had to fly to Atlanta it was $1300 round trip from State College. I drove to Harrisburg and flew Delta for $650. After Delta started jet service out of State College (serious competition to USAirs turbo-props to Pittsburgh and Philly) prices started to fall. When you're out in the rural areas, far from urban airports, you really pay to fly out...

I should have added a /sarcasm tag I guess.... They maybe out in the boonies but they are a couple hours or so from Dallas/Fort Worth which should give them a good shot at reasonable priced airfare.... Heck you'd think AA which is headquarted there would cut them a deal for this event.....

On the local news channel 6.

Rocker Ted Nugent plays sold out benefit concert
January 15, 2005
Rocker Ted Nugent jammed before a sold out crowd in Crawford Saturday night. The benefit concert helped raise money to send Crawford's high school band to Washington for President Bush's inaugural parade.

They're the only Texas high school band invited to play. Nugent says helping the kids achieve their goal, is the least he could do.

"These kids, possibly not having the chance to celebrate with our neighbor, the president, would be unacceptable and I got wind of it and said, 'Gee, I'm just a guitar player, I could probably help."

More than 700 tickets were sold to the show. The Crawford band leaves for Washington on Tuesday.

Ever try to put your Tuba in the overhead rack? Don't forget that thet travel with a lot of bulky stuff. You'll pay extra for your instruments.

And I wouldn't stay in any DC hotel that went for less than $175 per night.

For all the "bean counters" out there the concert tickets were only $68.571428 each.

The band is going.

Thanks Uncle Ted.

Thanks! I'm glad they're making it. $48,000 didn't seem outrageously expensive to me.

As the band director in a small band program in a neighboring state, I wish to say thank you to Nugent. Small bands like this just don't get such opportunities. This is a trip those band kids will never forget.

Another reason to like the Motor City Madman!

You need to do a bit more competitive marching band stuff. There is the
- Staffs (6+)
- Color Guard/Flag unit (most reporters leave them out)
- Chaperones (6+)
- Equipment goes by truck. Working instruments do not go in airline baggage and survive. Most likely the band has a semi dedicated trailer with special protection for them. Add the cost of a semi with driver both ways with layovers.

Its much more expensive than many realize. Its also one of the best activities a a child can do in high school.
