Hispanics angry over proposal to make English Arizona's official language
AP ^ | Jan 13 2004

A plan by some state lawmakers to make English the official language of Arizona is angering Hispanics, who comprise one-quarter of the state's 5 million residents.

The House measure would allow voters to require that most government business be conducted in English. State, cities and counties could not print documents such as water bills in Spanish or any other foreign language.

If approved by the Legislature, the measure would be on the 2006 ballot.

"It's insulting to Hispanics and Native Americans and anyone else who speak a different language," said Rep. Steve Gallardo, D-Phoenix.

I think that's a bit much.

When I was in Russia, I was delighted to see English instructions here and there.

It seems that Arizonans will get another chance to vote on this issue:
Arizona voters approved an English-only law in 1988, but the state Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional because it violated free speech and equal-protection rights. Pearce said his proposal is different from the 1988 referendum because it doesn't keep anyone from speaking or learning other languages.

Yes. They are unanimous in their support for Esperanto as the official language.

::applauding:: I love Arizona's politicians ONLY the ones with
(R) after their names!!

Now if ONLY the rest of the states would follow Arizona.

And if only the ones who don't understand ENGLISH would go back from where they came, so I don't have to choose,
"to listen in English press one","in spanish press two"
English always english.

This measure doesn't apply to election ballots.

That's the point. IT SHOULD!

If you're gonna vote in this country, you ought to be able to speak English.

Does Mexico have multi-lingual ballots? I doubt it.

I don't understand why we never made English our official language.

For the same reason we don't need an official report about bears relieving themselves in the woods.

Not only English is the official language of the US, but English is also the de facto international language, as well as the language of commerce.

Only languages in fear of extinction, such as French Canadian, need all these official protections.

My opinion exactly! If Washington had not allowed the United States to turn into an illegal alien DUMPING GROUND, then no law, or issue would even be on the table -- and making it doubly worse, is that THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER HAS TO PAY FOR IT, AGAINST THEIR WILL.

Thank you again, Washington DC.

The end result for most Hispanics who don't learn English...is lower income for life. Same goes for blacks or anybody else. This doesn't even begin to address the fracturing of the US along language/culture fault lines.
