"Church and family aren't the reason they're gay, and they're not the reason they cheat on their wives, but they sure do seem to be the reason so many of them marry women. I've seen a lot of this clinically..."

I'll take the chance here, and take your entire comment at face value.

Two questions: given that church and family aren't the reason they are gay, what in your clinical opinion ARE the common reasons they are gay?

Other than your clinical experience, do you have sources that back up your agreement w/ Oprah's statement?

The short answer is that nobody knows, and nobody is ever going to know. Determination of causality takes experimental methodology, something that is entirely unethical and impossible in this situation. All one can do is study correlations.

Not offhand. That's why I phrased it that way. However, doesn't it make sense to you, too? There's a lot of pressure in churches and families for people to get married and settle down (and refrain from "coming out" as gay). I've seen it happen time and time again.
