Former Clinton aide to help Pens (NHL)

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins have hired an adviser from the Al Gore and John Kerry U.S. presidential campaigns to help in the NHL team's pursuit of a gambling licence.

David Morehouse, a 44-year-old native of Pittsburgh, will serve as the Penguins' senior consultant for special projects. The state legislature legalized slot machines last year. The Penguins plan to use proceeds from the slots parlour to build a new downtown arena.

Morehouse most recently served as John Kerry's travelling chief of staff. He was a senior adviser to Al Gore from 1999-2001, working on the Gore presidential campaign. He also was an aide to former U.S. president Bill Clinton.

Morehouse also worked as deputy director of executive education at the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government from 2001-03.

"It's a bit ironic that I'm going to be working for the Penguins on building a new arena, considering I spent a good part of my youth trying to sneak into Penguins games to see Syl Apps, Jean Pronovost and Dave Burrows at the Civic Arena," Morehouse said.

Hockey ping!

Thought this interesting. A hockey themed casino? Slots in the lobby of the arena?

...to help in the NHL team's pursuit of a gambling licence.

I guess that hockey thing isn't working well this year...

This will have to happen after the NHL disbands because Bettman has destroyed the league.

Former Clinton aide to help Pens

Had to read that one 2 or three times. I thought it said ... well, nevermind.

Sorry, am at the orifice office and don't have the ping lists handy.

Is the stadium really bad? Oh and if there is a hockey themed casino- anywhere!- I am going. LOL

There is a hockey bar in St. Paul (where else?) and Mr. RK and I just about ran there.

Will it be a hockey themed arena....

or a hockey arena with gambling plus a bunch of drunk and angry people?

Before you freak out, I work security at Madison Square Garden in NYC and I have seen Ranger fans go nuts.

Maybe when the other team scores a goal, the Pens will pull a big slot lever to see whether it counts or not. Maybe then they could compete with other NHL teams on an equal footing.

:-)

Oh wait, no one is playing right now. My bad.

I would be drunk and angry if I were a Rangers fan, too. I understand their pain. We had Fleury on our team for a while, too.

It's very old. There aren't the kind of amenities that make money for a team. And no luxury boxes. Without those kinds of revenues, the Pens will never be able to afford to field a competitive team.

Oh, now there's a smart idea! Why don't you go see what Dukakis and Mondale are doing?

Oh yeah, they need the sky boxes. They are big money makers. Even in the United Center where the Blackhawks would be playing and the Bulls "play" (I use the term loosely) all the sky boxes are sold to major corporations except for a couple that can be rented out.

We looked into renting one for our wedding reception (did I mention we are BIG hockey fans! LOL!) and it was $5000. That's just for the box. That did not include, food, parking, drinks- nothing. Now they have one called "The Hawks Nest" that is the size of 2 or 3 sky boxes with a full size bar and the works and that is even more expensive to rent.

Even our AHL team has most of them sold-out.
