Local News/The Weather Channel/NWS
| 1.13.05

Tornado warnings are presently up for counties around Birmingham, Huntsville & Montgomery, AL; this system has spawned tornadoes in parts of Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas on it's way eastward.
Birmingham is under the gun now, and the system will be approaching Chattanooga, Atlanta and points eastward over the afternoon and evening.
WVTM-TV (NBC 13) Birmingham is presently streaming live coverage at http://nbc13.com/ - I expect local stations in Chattanooga and Atlanta to join in within the next couple of hours.

Yep, from shorts yesterday toting firewood inside today.
Take care all points eastward - a mighty rush of wind came through here last night - thought I was going to lose a couple of trees.

So the notes at "65/_300" means 30,000ft tops going 65 knots?

"Dad lives just east of Nashville, he said it just passed over him headed west with no problems.."Thanks for that update. My father-in-law is in Jackson. It sounds like he should be in the clear now too.

Ditto here at the Lake of the Ozarks. Yesterday we had 60 degrees and rain. Last night, storms, thunder and lightning. Today, sleet and snow.

We were SUPPOSED to get rain, sleet then snow, but from the looks of things, it went right to snow. I just hope it doesn't freeze over. Driving in ice is just plain scary!

"So the notes at "65/_300" means 30,000ft tops going 65 knots?" That's what it means, but it's probably in error. Although that's a fast moving cold front individual cells are not likely traveling as fast as some of those numbers indicate.
The radar summary is derived from numerous radar sites and parallax error can make for some sometimes goofy numbers on velocity and tops.
