TRENTON, N.J. (Reuters) - New Jersey, home to scores of top drug companies, plans to spend $380 million on stem cell research to stay in the forefront of the politically sensitive field, its acting governor said on Tuesday.

Richard Codey told the state Assembly that New Jersey will spend $150 million to build the Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey, whose founding was announced last May. Voters in November will be asked to approve a bond issue of $230 million to pay for its operation.

First my own California, now New Jersey. Which liberal state can throw the most money and lives onto the stem-cell research altar? Let the one-upmanship begin.

yep, life in the blue states....This hits really close to home for me because I'm in grad school at Rutgers where much of the research/killing will take place. Nice to know that the state can afford to give tens of millions of dollars to Rutgers to end lives, but not enough to pay us TA's a living wage. SOrry if I sound like a liberal there. I'm not complaining that our salaries are low, I freely chose this career path, but that there are so many other things at Rutgers that this money could be better spent on.

How much more money is this state's pathetic Democratic leadership going to throw around? Sadly, I think it's going to get much worse than this before it gets any better.

That's what happens in a state which, time and time again, allows its dirty politicians to get away with scandal after scandal, and allows them to throw around money wherever they please.

$4 billion deficit and this guy wants to put money into unnecessary programs. Unbelievable.

If Bush had come out for Stem Cells they would be trying to ban it. They are as children.

Maybe, but being that it's New Jersey, they probably would have spent $380 million trying to ban it, too.

"...there are so many other things at Rutgers that this money could be better spent on..."

Yeah, like filling the library with some contemporary books. I don't know if that's a problem at Rutgers, but the books at my university are ancient.

the Rutgers library is adequate when it comes to recent titles (at least in my field of study) but I'm sure it could use some of this extra dough. Scholarships, general upkeep of the campus and buildings, raises for the employees, all of these things are needed, but no, we need to spend millions of dollars to kill embryos.

Is that embryonic Stem cell research? Stem cells can be extracted from Bone marrow and umbilical cords after a baby is born. There are adult stem cells.

If EMBRYONIC stem cell research is so promising, why aren't BIG Business Drug Companies jumping on the bandwagon.

"Dr. Ira Black, director of the stem cell institute, said it would cost about $50 million a year to run the center, which plans to conduct research using cells from different sources, including embryos."

Yep.

This is nothing new for New Jersey. Starting with McGreavey (who had laws specifically enacted to provide for stem cell research) and now this. They're fooling their constituencies and robbing them blind. See the attached post:

Is that embryonic Stem cell research?  >>>

YES, and the NJ law is the most barbaric since it allows cloning where  children can grow full term and then be killed!!  NJ is the cannibal state.

NJ Gov. Dick Codey to push "embryonic" stem cells in State of State (action alert)

It will be legal in New Jersey to implant cloned human embryos into wombs, gestate them for up to nine months, and then destroy them for use in research.  click

CT, WA, IL, and WI are pushing for stem cell research. The liberals are saying private money isn't enough. They say govt money will enable the cripples to walk and the blind to see. What the RATS are doing is downright exploitive.

That's what is so despicable about this. They are exploiting the desperation of people who are in dire personal straits, perhaps without hope, grasping at straws the 'Rats dangle before them, all for furthering their own sorry political careers. That's the tell, when 'Rats talk about wanting to "help people", the only people they really want to help are themselves.
