(WA) Time has finally come for performance audits
Everett Herald ^ | 1-12-05 | Staff

Most taxpayers, we suspect, share a nagging feeling that somewhere, somehow, government is wasting their money. And despite improvements in fiscal discipline by some local governments - Snohomish County and the City of Everett come to mind - there's little doubt that such feelings are justified. Taxpayers deserve to know that their dollars are being spent wisely and effectively, that state and local governments are getting maximum bang out of every buck. Independent performance audits of government agencies and programs offer the best chance of assuring that happens. State Auditor Brian Sonntag, a Democrat, has been campaigning for performance audits since he took office 12 years ago. His call has been supported by most conservatives, but has yet to make it into law. That may be about to change. Tim Eyman's initiative factory this week filed Initiative 900, which would authorize the state auditor to conduct independent, comprehensive performance audits of state and local governments, agencies and programs. The conservative Evergreen Freedom Foundation is pushing a performance audit bill in the Legislature, giving lawmakers their own chance to put real government accountability into play. If they don't seize it, voters may do it for them.

ABOUT FREAKIN' TIME!!!!

I worked for a local (county) agency last year and the waste and incompetance were pathetic beyond belief.

They spent a QUARTER MILLION to move data from one database table to another - we repeatedly told them we could do it ourselves in 4 hours... This is only ONE example of hundreds! Their Database Administrator did not know how to use the database... A Senior Programmer could not program.. The same company that wrote failed software systems keeps getting rehired to make more...

Yes. Instead of showing us partial budgets and hiding lots of information inside the Combined Annual Fiscal Reports, let's see some actual open accounting on a form we can all understand. For every level of government, and publish it where we can all see it. Not just here in WA, but nationwide. Line by line, dollar by dollar, lay all of the cards out on the table. We DARE you.

Once the taxpayers start seeing where their money actually goes, the game is up, and the tar and feathers will only be the beginning.

The conservative Evergreen Freedom Foundation is pushing a performance audit bill in the Legislature,

As I write, anti-audit GregGore is being inaugurated as fraudulent governor of WA. May Eyman, Evergreen, and everyone else make her life a living hell!

The most striking thing about the WA election was the number of votes in commie King County that were cast for Rossi. Dems there voted overwhelmingly for Kerry but underwhelmingly for GregGore. Even the liberals are finally getting over their attachment to crooked government, a FACT that GregGore and her minions must be worried about--if they have an ounce of brains, which is questionable.

Yes, Rossi won the election, only cheating and fraud put GregGore in office as the illegit governor. She's on very shaky ground.

The New Zealand approach used in the 1980s to roll back government is an excellent template for ALL levels of government to use in auditing their performance and reducing size. Check it out:
