I dunno what's up. I'm making dough hand over fist, myself.
More entry-level admins with AA degrees?
supply and demand
Part of the problem is that the positions were really inflated in the early to mid 90s. Today, the average user can do almost as much as the experts could do then. I'd bet that the top tier IT professionals didn't suffer the same backwards motion, but it would be odd to keep overpaying people for something that so many can do. The rarity of available experience is what drive wages for any occupation.
Up until this year my IT salary was on par with national stats. Now I'm told I make 38% more than average and because of that I'm not getting a raise this year. Instead I will be given what would have been my raise in 2 lump sums over the year.
Is this a prelude to me being laid off for being paid to much?
We'll see!
Less command line commands needed
It seems that just when I "really got good", nobody needed me anymore.
Probably. Both the Bush Administration and Congress have you targetted to be squashed like a bug.

Well I'm gonna fool them as I've already taken care of my own Social Security!~}
Kids who signed up for degrees during the boom years finally entered the job market and found - to the surprise of noone - that they were still too late for the options-millionaire-foosball trip.
That said, I'll bet a fair few of them are doing sterling work cranking out spyware, adware and trojans to slow my system down.
Thanks guys [and gals], AMERICA SALUTES YOU.
If the gov't stayed out of the market, I would agree with you. But they are importing foreign nationals, changing the natural supply in this country.
And the Bush Administration maintains the regulatory shackles that oppress domestic business and industries while allowing (and even encouraging) foreign businesses to hack us off at the knees.
The money in high tech these days is in solution customization and rapid exploitation and commercialization of emergent architectures. But the old staples of chips, computers and telecom equipment has fallen into the hands of foreign players, most notably, the Communist Red Chinese.
Don't tell them you have it or they'll find a way of taking it without you even knowing it's happening.
No funny money around any more, I remember complete idiots were making six figures and had no idea what they were doing. For a great documentry watch start-up.com
I am one of those guys, but I do not do spyware. I found a job as an Assistant Systems Admin/desktop/hareware support. My wage suck, but I have good benifits. I am streadly working on inproving my skill set. But I do not like one bit the continued influx of H1B's. We need less not more.
I agree as the industry keep moving to a plug and play world why pay big bucks when you can get it done for pennies. There will be a time in the not so distant future where a janitor will be able to run most IT systems.
