Yep, Rather was at least as culpable as Mapes, and ultimately it was his decision to air the so obviously faked documents. His 'retirement' allows him to leave with dignity, though he deserves no such break. He's a faker, always has been a faker, and will be remembered as a faker.

He is being allowed to retire as the anchorman for the evening news.

However, he is being allowed to maintain his reporting position on 60 Minutes II, which is where the "exposé" was shown.

That's a slap in the face to every American, don't you think?
