Funny how many "conservatives" here supported anti-Iraq and pro EU Yushchenko over outgoing PM Viktor Yanukovych who along with President Kuchma sent Ukrainian troops to Iraq. But old outdated Cold-War emotions and religious hatred of Eastern Orthodox can be easily manipulated.

I still support Yushchenko even if he wants to bring back Ukrainian troops. What matters is that the will of the people in the presidential election was upheld.

It's just a case of freedom and democracy in Ukraine being more important to us than the contribution of their troops to our effort in Iraq.

Not a tough concept for most, Destro, but it's kicking your ass.

That's not the point... the fact that the people were able to choose their leader is more important than whether or not that leader keeps the troops in Iraq or not.

Funny how freedom for 47 million Ukrainians is nicer than 1,600 Ukrainian troops in Iraq.

most of us bought the Yushchenko=clean-govt candidate. media spin? Yeah, but alot of truth to it too; if the do-over vote was clean, this was perhaps the case that democracy did triumph. But it was clear this was liberal/youth/city/pro-EU centered, which in turn implies the secularist liberal European ideology and not necessarily pro-American. But I'd rather have a true democrat of liberal sentiments than an autocrat, and that's how the media played this.

"and religious hatred of Eastern Orthodox "

This part I dont understand ... Ukraine is mostly catholic, and the Pat Robertson CBN presented Yushchenko's wife as a woman of Christian faith ... Was this election Catholic/evangelical v Russian orthodox, or is that just a proxy for the ethnic division in the race (Russian vs. Ukrainian)? I dont think the religion angle even entered into the consciousness here. Most of us are unaware of the real subtexts of these political races, just as Europeans would likely scratch their heads over Kerry's intense desire to kill a duck 4 weeks before the election.

LOL. I just have to laugh. Wasn't this guy mr popular just a few short weeks ago. People were supporting him without even knowing what the heck he stood for just because the media said he was 'pro-west.'

Still, I don't want to be on the side of the communists who have tried to kill him, it looks like repeatedly. We can't influence everything, everywhere. Pax Americana, like everything, has its limits.

I'm sure the 3 Polish members of the EUfascist elite will be along to call you names and such in a few, you know, for telling the truth.

Lets see, France and Germany demanded and Poland and Hungary complied by withdrawing. Ok, their members of the EU Fascists club. Now wanna be members Ukraine and Bulgaria are leaving, but hay, they support the EU and thus the "West" so this is good for America, right? How? Well we get to bleed more while they sit and pick at us along with the rest of the Franco-Germanic-Spanish "West".

The point I have taken from FReeper support of Yushchenko over Yanukovych was that Yanukovych tried to steal the election via stronghand and other methods typical of old Stalinist Communists and modern era USA Democrats. You overstate your argument.

Destro,

Copme now, you are too smart to know that there are two Ukrainian Orthodox Churches that did not support Yanukovich and that it was only the Moscow Church that openly prostituted themselves as the lapdogs of Putin and Yanukovich.

There is no hatred of Orthodoxy - only a hatred of the KGB filled Moscow Church that had the audacity to parade around as supporters of Putin's boys.

You do realize that Kuchma is the one pulling the troops out right now don't you?

I'm sure you saw the article that was posted soon after this one that outlined that.

What do you have to say to that?
