While Bush recommends an AG (Gonzales)

Does anyone know if Gonzales was born in Mexico or was he an "anchor baby" or born to US citizens?

Alberto R. Gonzales (born August 4, 1955 in San Antonio, Texas, USA) is a Mexican-American attorney and politician from the state of Texas. He is currently U.S. President George W. Bush's White House Counsel, and is Bush's nominee to replace John Ashcroft as United States Attorney General.

Gonzales was raised in Houston, the second of eight children born to Pablo and Maria Gonzales. His father, who died in 1982, was a construction worker, and both his parents were children of migrants from Mexico with less than a high-school education themselves. An honor student at MacArthur High School in Houston, Gonzales enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1973, serving for two years at Fort Yukon, Alaska before being accepted to the United States Air Force Academy in 1975. In 1977 he transferred to Rice University, where he earned a degree in political science in 1979; he then earned a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1982. He was the only one of his siblings to finish college. He has been married twice: he and his first wife, Diane Clemens, divorced in 1985; he and his second wife, Rebecca Turner, have three sons.

A question I've been asking myself for a while now.

I've heard it both ways: that his parents were legal and illegal.

I would guess that, having crossed into the U.S. in the early '50s, around the time of "Operation Wetback" in 1954, they were probably legal. The actual population then of people who were here illegally was rather low, due to strict enforcement.

It is amazing, though. Here we have as noiminee for Attorney General of the United States a guy whose citizenship, and loyalty, to the United States is a question mark. He has memberships in various race and ethnically based organizations, many of whom essentially view the current boundaries of the United States as illegitimate. He stated during the Senate hearing that he believed illegal aliens are otherwise "lawful citizens", apparently as long as they aren't committing any ordinary crimes. Fascinating response for the top law officer of the United States, and the man whom the Border Patrol must look to for prosecution of the criminals they apprehend (the people who just happen to be committing the crime he claims isn't one).

There are millions of attornies in this country. Many of them are multi-generational natives, whose history winds all throughout American history. Does Mr. Bush really believe that this guy is "the Best Man for the job", or is this the most ridiculous case of Affirmative Action ever foisted on the American public?

You can probably guess my answer.

And I don't think it will be hard to figure where Sr. Gonzalez, hijo de Mexico, comes down on immigration laws made by gringos.
