Could it be a new sandbar/obstacle created by the earthquake that causes the tsunami ?

You know there are reports of the straights around sumatra were 4000 feet deep now only 100ft deep in places. You mean a lot of Bravo Sierra reports.

But it can be estimated: Shallow! Oh, wait, duh! I just realized it could've been submerged when it "ran aground." I assumed it was on the surface. That'll teach me to check my assumptions before posting, lol.

Thanks. I see it's still active, too. Will check it out.

The earthquake was 7,000 miles away from where this occured.

My son was in AWACS when he was in the Navy, and they did a lot of night flights in that area of the Pacific. Once they were flying along happily, no hazards according to the chart, etc. when he suddenly noticed something on the instruments. He told the pilot to pull up (which, fortunately, the pilot did very rapidly) and they just missed a huge volcanic cone that had recently thrust up out of the ocean and was not on the maps.

I agree! A "sandbar" or "pinnacle" could have been another sub. I still wonder about our sub that was damaged about the time the Kursk went down. I understand the Kursk went down because of on-board torpedo failure rather than a collision as originally claimed by Russia. Never heard any other news about our damaged sub though not that a landlubber would.
Gob Bless the S.F. crew and families of the injured and dead.

The Sumatra earthquake significantly altered the undersea topography there. Was this a result of the earthquake? How close was the sub to Sumatra?

It is important to note that being a member of the military is a dangerous occupation, whether in battle or not.
My prayers are with our sailors.

The earthquake was 7,000 miles away from where this occured. And people died from the effects of the tsunami in east Africa, who were a lot more than 7000 miles away from the earthquake.

Great map!
You know, the more I think about it, that 9.0 in Sumatra MAY have moved some stuff. that bloody earthquake rang the earth like a bell, and shifted sumatra by something like 90 feet. This COULD have had an impace on other places in the ring of fire...
Maybe a geologist could better answer that question!!!! Anyone here a Geologist?

That Capt'n and the XO are fried for sure now. XO had nothing to do with it. He'll probably be promoted to skipper. CO's finished though. The navy has canned skippers for a hell of a lot less, in fact CO demotions are endemic in the navy right now.

One thing I saw on the news last night And Im not saying this has to anything with this. But it was really startling. In certain areas of the Ocean floor that where 3-4k feet underwater now are only a few hundred feet under the surface. Thats a lot of land moving around down there.

He said it was the closest near-death experience he had in his entire time in the Navy. And actually, he said one of the guys - he swears it wasn't him - actually did wet his pants! (I sure would have!)

Because the wave reached Africa. Not because the sea floor shifted off Africa.
