BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (CNN) -- Gunfire broke out in the city of Banda Aceh, while a deadly blast shook an area where relief workers are helping out in Sri Lanka, raising concern about the safety of foreign aid groups helping tsunami survivors.

The gunfire, which was heard near the U.N. headquarters in the provincial capital of Aceh, Indonesia, before dawn on Sunday, woke aid workers who have poured into the city, but hurt no one.

The shooting, which some police blamed on rebels waging a separatist campaign in Aceh province, underscores the threat to scores of foreigners helping survivors of the December 26 tsunami that has killed more than 155,000 people across the battered region.

<sarcasm>
It's a good thing our government is pouring hundreds of millions of our tax dollars into these regions. We wouldn't want any terrorists or Islamic fundementalists to suffer. Or be faced with the realization that their culture of death and repression leaves them ill-equipped to survive on their own.

There are plenty of these groups whining about the Indonesian military...and that's the problem..Human rights groups will wring their hands about "peace" and strengthen the rebels(pure Islamic Kingdom promoters) while the (admittedly sometimes brutal) Indonesian military gets its hands tied.
Sri Lanka and the Tamil..I am not as educated about.

Unbelievable isn't it? Funding AND fighting the war on terrorism?

Maybe the fresh load of terrorists hitched a ride with Annan on his private jet.

Gunfire mystery in Banda Aceh

"There have been reports of militant Islamic groups moving into the province aiming to counter any use of the disaster by Western aid groups to push a Christian agenda."

Gee, I thought they were there to aid the victims/sarcasm

Force protection trumps diplomacy. Bring in the Marines, 82nd/101st Airborne, SF -- whatever it takes. Help the needy; snuff the troublemakers...

America (especially the left) must accept that the "war on terror" is truly global -- another "World War" -- and we can not afford to lose!.

Deadly blast in Sri Lanka

BERUWALA, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- A grenade attack has killed three people and wounded 34 others in eastern Sri Lanka, where tsunami relief efforts are underway.

The attack at a funeral in a rebel-controlled area near the eastern Sri Lankan town of Batticaloa, is adding to concerns over aid workers and civilians safety.

Most of the wounded were taken to a hospital in the government-controlled area, police said Sunday.

The motive for the attack was not clear, but police suspect it was the result of religious tensions between Hindus and Christians.

Such tensions have been muted in the wake of the December 26 tsunami disaster, which killed over 46,000 on the island nation.

However, relief workers fear their efforts to get medical aid to the survivors will be hampered by sectarian violence.

Sri Lanka has been torn by a civil war for 20 years between the rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the government.

Hundreds of people protested in the Tamil-majority north on Sunday after U.N. chief Kofi Annan agreed to a government request not to visit the tsunami-stricken areas under rebel control, according to The Associated Press.

CNN Producer Phil Turner contributed to this report

Actually my article does not mention Christians..they seem to be a target for anyone in the region not Christian,of course, but the Buddhists, Hindus, tribes, are mentioned..in Sri Lanka.
It's the Aceh rebels who want to an be independent Islamic Kingdom.
