My son Zackery Sobin is an e-5 nuke S.O., he was in the engine room at the time of the grounding. He was leaning forward up against a cabnet and has bruised ribs ,a bump on his head and a sore neck. He also told me of the detailed navagational charts that indicated clear sailing. He was preforming a test on the reactor secondary cooling water , a test he aborted... obviously.Zack has a shutdown and cooldown duty watch starting a couple of hours ago that will take at least 20 hours. Tell your son that you have been coesponding with Zack's dad. I was hoping they would give him a break.

First off I would like to thank everyone who has offered prayers for us over these past few days. It really means alot to the crew to know that the sub force cares about us.

Second, I know it's human nature to speculate but I have read the previous posts and they are way off.

Third, CDR. Mooney is a Capt in the finest sense of the word. No matter what happens, He is MY Captain!

Fourth, Rest in Peace shipmate to my fallen comrade Cooter. It's hard to type this as I am tearing up just thinking about his passing.

Lastly, I have just been able to go topside to see the extent of the damage and if not for the finest Captain and best crew in the sub force, She would not have brought us home. HOOOYAH San Francisco!!

My son Kevin was an R.O. on the San Francisco until February 2003. I called Kevin after I read your post and he said "Oh yeah, I remember Zack, I was in his division." Tell Zack Kevin is thinking about the guys and hopes things will be okay.

My son is Ben Sidwell who is an E-6 and is assistant to the Chief Engineer. Zack would be in his department. He was also given responsibility for Training and I don't know what that entails. I am unfamiliar with the sub organizational or command structure. My son knows Zack and I told him that we were corresponding via this forum.

My son went thru the nuclear power training and then spent 2 years on the teaching staff at Bolliston Spa, NY. At the end of 2 years he was given orders for the Abraham Lincoln but he didn't want to be on a carrier, so he volunteered for the submarine service. Given his height, weight, and size 15 shoe, I thought he was quite courageous to go the submarine route.
I will tell Ben that we are corresponding. They have been thru a trying experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
The crew will recieve counseling in the next few days and as I told my son, "time is the best healer of all".
Best wishses to you and your family as well as all the crew and their families.

I question the thought of posting your son's name on a public forum.....especially since he is aboard a boat.

Maybe you can get the mods to delete his name and substitute it with xxx or something.
