Sounds like SINS(Ships Inertial Navigation System) was in error......Bottom sounding sonar should have been manned or at least put on auto and set to alarm....some splainin' to do by the navigator and chief quartermaster.

Boats haven't had SINS in years. This boat probably had ESGN. If they were that close to the bottom, they were likely operating well outside of their SUBNOTE.

It was last used on the 637 Class and was replaced in 92-93 with ESGN (electrically suspended gyro navigation)
