I've been waiting for a submarine thread, because I've become curious these past two weeks....I am wondering what the effect would be on a submerged sub in the path of a tsunami; I understand they can travel at hundreds of miles per hour underwater until they approach a land mass.
They're already under water (hopefully deep). Maybe they could be lifted in their depth, who knows? But they ride out hurricanes no problem.
Which science fiction books have you been reading?
They misinformed you.
Water pressures would prevent any boat from achieving those kinds of speeds.
From a physics standpoint.....total impossibility at this point in the evolution of technolgy.
Ex-boat sailor. :-)
A submerged sub would hardly notice it aside from a slight change in pressure. In the open ocean the amplitude of the wave is miniscule and the frequency is huge.
I hear that all the time, "ex-dolphin" "ex-submariner" etc... Last time I looked on the back of my "fish" (dolphins) there was no expiration date! I qualled as a "Submariner and will die as one.
As to the question of a sub in the path of a tsunami that question was asked on one of the Sub BBS's right after the incident. Several folks replied that they had been aboard subs rithg ove underwater earthquakes and said they got really bounced around. They were too close to feeel the waves.
Give the skipper a chance. We don't know what happened. The trend today seems to be to can the skippers though since you only ever get one Sub Command ever. No going to another boat. You go to squadron or you get out.
