A journalist can be a commentator, but a commentator cannot be a journalist.
In other words, a journalist does actual reporting, but can also do opinion pieces. But, if you are just a commentator like O'Reilly, you are not a journalist.
How about his newspaper column, certainly he could be considered as much of a journalist as say Dowd or Krugman
