Have not heard it or read it myself, but a friend tells me Colin Powell yesterday announced a resumption of military aid to Indonesia. A connection?

An extremist Islamic group ... has set up a relief camp on Indonesia's tsunami-stricken Sumatra island

That was my opinion, too - good, we know where to find them.

Analysts said Islamic terrorists known to operate in Indonesia would be foolish to try to attack anyone helping the hundreds of thousands of tsunami victims, because it could result in aid groups pulling out and sour the militants' chances of building popular support.

I suppose this Associated Press writer lives in tool shed.  Attacking foreign aid workers is precisely what Al Qaeda likes to do, re Afghanistan and Iraq.

I'm also wondering whether this Laskar Mujahdin group is the part of the long running Aceh insurgency.  Shortly after the tsunami the government declared a kind of truce:

"We're holding back,'' said Lt. Col. Ali Tarunajaya, an Aceh police chief.

"We're not going to arrest the rebels. They're looking for members of their families, just like many of our police members are looking for theirs. We're all crying together.''

That was on 30 December.  Yesterday this happened:

Separatist rebels reportedly opened fire on state troops in Aceh province on Thursday (6/1/05) and there was an unconfirmed report that three insurgents were killed when soldiers allegedly returned fire.

Reports said the incident took place near a destroyed bridge in Lhoknga, about 40 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital Banda Aceh, when rebel snipers on two small fishing boats fired two shots while troops were wrapping the body of a dead soldier in black plastic.

The Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) admits it is continuing its attacks against GAM, but emphasizes that most soldiers in Aceh are helping conducting humanitarian operations.

TNI says it has killed three rebels during clashes over the past week. The military accuses the rebels of ambushing aid convoys and stealing supplies – a claim strongly denied by GAM.

Andrew Natsios, the director of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), on Wednesday said fighting between state troops and rebels shut down Banda Aceh’s main supply road for about eight hours earlier this week, when a convoy carrying rice and soy beans was stopped. He gave no further details.

Jan Egeland, the UN Emergency Relief coordinator, on Wednesday urged governments and rebel movements in tsunami-hit Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Somalia to keep the peace or risk a cut-off in foreign aid.

"We have a message to the parties to the conflicts: Suspend your conflict and work together with us to help your own people… We need that ceasefire, that peace, to hold because if new conflict breaks out, we cannot help the people," he said.

I would not underestimate the power of 'wait till they leave' threats. However, people have to decide to overpower these people sometime.
