2004 was a year not to be quickly forgotten. It was a year of natural disasters. There were hurricanes and earthquakes, a massive tsunami and, of course, Theresa Heinz-Kerry. It was the year of elections, from those in the United States to those in Afghanistan and Ukraine. A great defender of freedom passed on in Ronald Reagan, as did the “father of modern terrorism," Yasser Arafat.
As the New Year approaches we will not forget those servicemen who died fighting for our country nor those who lived doing so. We look forward to the prospect of peace, as elections in both Iraq and Palestine will take place in the year to come. And now, we take one last look at the year by the numbers.
20,000,000: Estimate, in dollars, spent by George Soros in trying to defeat George W. Bush, proving that campaign finance reform really does get the money out of politics and money can buy anything.
10: Net advantage of Republican held seats in the Senate following the 2004 election.
49,369,947: Tickets sold in America to see a foreign-language, subtitled film about “that Jesus dude.”
93: The age of Ronald Reagan when he passed away on June 5.
60,608,582: Number of votes received by President Bush in his re-election campaign, surpassing the previous record-holder, Ronald Reagan.
0: number of terrorist attacks on US Soil since 2002 when 74% of respondents thought it was likely there would be a terrorist attack “within the next few months” in the United States. In 2003 that number was 74%, and in August 2004, 67%.
4: Years running that President Bush has been voted most admired man in America.
11/11: Ratio of states voting for a Constitutional Amendment to ban Same-Sex marriages. Proving that it is just another rightwing conspiracy, even states voting for John Kerry overwhelmingly approved the measures.
1: Republican-sabotaging Anchormen working for CBS quickly brought down by “morons in pajamas.”
92: Percent of young children frightened by the infamous Howard Dean scream: “Yeeeaaarrrrgghhhh!" (Source: Dan Rather).
402-2: The final vote by the House rejecting the re-establishment of the draft. But thanks for playing anyway.
0: Cost for John Kerry supporters to receive treatment for “Post Election Selection Trauma” in Boca Raton, Florida. Treatment offered first by local “clinical psychologists” and subsequently by Rush Limbaugh.
1: Number of duels requested by Senator Zell Miller (D-GA). Occasion also marks first time someone was able to shut up MSNBC’s Chris Matthews.
And as we head into the New Year, I offer but this simple wish: “May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.”
