Dana Priest of Washington Post tells MSNBC this is about 2 memos. Priest says Gonzales will have trouble explaining his position on the one memo about torture at Guantanamo, that Gonzales signed off on a memo from the AG that didn't give the president enough information.

As we watch this, it's important to remember, Gonzales didn't actually write any of the memos he's going to be grilled over.

Last night on Hardball, Ted Olsen did a good job of explaining all this...wish I had taken notes.s

Olson kicked Chrissie's butt! Hope Alberto will do the same to Leahy, et.al.

I saw Ted Olson on with Matthews and Olson was fabulous as was Laura Ingraham later. The day before Frank Gaffney was terrific but Chrissy mocked him last night to another guest.

One anti-Gonzales witness today (Hutson) was on Spitball, too.

Cornyn is doing a great job stating the theory, law and supporting voices and documentation on the issue at hand of the treatment of prisoners. Ah, notes Congress, not Gonzales, who defined "torture".

I do not thinks so. Irregular forces are not covered by the Geneva Convention. However, the US will afford them the GC anyway, but we are under no obligation.

No time to parphrase...

"There is a lot of commentary that makes clear that to be a member of an "armed force" under 4(a)(1) or 4(a)(3), you must still meet the four criteria in 4(a)(2). The idea of 4(a)(2) was to give irregular forces, such as militias, POW treatment if they conducted themselves according to the standards of normal armed forces, hence the listing of the four criteria. This has been the historical understanding from before even the Geneva Conventions. . . .[T]he Geneva Conventions were trying to encourage these irregular forces to operate according to the higher, "armed force" standard by promising POW treatment in exchange."

As you know, al qaeda and terrorists do not abide by the GC - or treat the same to US forces, so we do not have to either. I say give no quarters - but that's me.
