Actually, when you view the movie 2001, we are quite a bit further advanced than the movie predicted, especially in communications and computers. We could have done the space travel they showed in the movie had we been willing to spend the money. We have the technology to do everything they did.

The computer looked just like 1960s computers: rooms and rooms full of it. But it became a person and fell in love.

Many computer predictions have come true (except for AI), probably because of Moore's law.

The prediction about a passenger spaceplane powered by solid fuel reminds me of SpaceShipOne.

"We have the technology to do everything they did."

Except suspended animation and a truly thinking computer.

Actually, we could have done that already if government control didn't stand in the way. As long as the government stays out of PCs, we will continue to have the great advances we have so far generated.
