God rest his soul. Here is a man who actually accomplished something in his life. Something that led to simple pleasures for millions of people.

I suspect we'll not see over-the-top obituaries for him like we saw with Susan Sontag, who never did a damn thing to contribute to the public good in her entire miserable seventy-plus years.

Dalquist had summer places in Grand Marais, Minn., and on Wisconsin's Madeline Island in Lake Superior, where he was an avid boater and advocate for protecting the lake. For 29 years, he served as Lake Superior's Rear Commodore for the Great Lakes Cruising Club, the largest yachting association in the world.

He was active in the Great Lakes Center in Duluth and the Lake Superior Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point, Mich. He was also a philanthropist and member of the University of Minnesota's President's Club.
