You seem to have forgotten the discussion of just a few threads ago where several posters explained to you why a tariff arrangement was a useless thing to do. It not only does not raise nearly enough revenue to be revenue neutral (which is the requirement for a major tax bill), but it does nothing to eliminate either the income tax OR the IRS. It basically accomplishes nothing except, perhaps, initiate a trade war or two.

In view of that, you might answer the question "What's so fair about a tax on income?"

* You want more government direction of investment (so that the "right" projects get funded, like your precious railroads)

Unlike the Bush Administration's Medicare prescription drug giveaway, development of transportation infrastructure promotes commerce and economic growth.

* You want higher taxes (so that we get rid of all that icky debt you hate so much)

Not true. I advocate a revenue neutral shift in tax policy that would facilitate domestic business investment rather than watching it continue to hemorrhage offshore.
A Proposal to Abolish the Corporate Income Tax

* You want more restrictions on the flow of goods and services across borders (so that brown people don't get any of our money)

I advocate sovereign control of our national borders regardless of the foreign origin of goods or people who cross them. But thanks for playing the "race card", it shows that you are not a true conservative.

Not really.

His "pertinent post" was rebutted on that thread.

"I'm glad to know that other countries are becoming freer than than US in the economic sense."

I still maintain that the word FREE is a SUPERLATIVE and there is no way to be freeER, you can only be MORE or LESS repressed in the same way that you cannot be MORE PERFECT, there is only MORE IMPERFECT or LESS IMPERFECT.

OK, good point.

I'm glad to know that other countries are becoming less repressed than the US in the economic sphere. I might visit Estonia next summer, just to see the great transformation from Marxist pre-planned economy to free-wheeling capitalism. I'm sure most Estonians have strong opinions about this change.

I am NOT glad to know that other countries are becoming less repressed than the US! I wish the US were becoming less repressed instead of ever more so. I wish that young people were taught the unimaginable sacrifice that our founders were willing to make to breathe free air. I wish that there were a lot fewer people who expect a government solution to every problem. I wish I weren't such a GRUMPY OLD MAN ; 0 (

Estonia, here I come

We are on our way somewhere you don't want to go, whether you physically leave or not.

"Hong Kong, Singapore, Luxembourg, Estonia, Ireland, New Zealand, Britain, Denmark, Iceland, Australia, and Chile,"

How many of those top ten have already privatized their state-run retirement programs? I know Chile, Britain, and Australia did. How can we expect to be in the top ten as long as the government confiscates 15% of our income for an alleged retirement program that is bound to go broke if we ever allow the vast majority of those "contributing" to collect benefits?

Reform Socialist Security and we would be number 1.

Not quite - as per the WSJ piece, the US has basically been standing still, and there has been a small backward drift due to things like Sarbanes-Oxley.

The Republican led government had to do something to divert blame from itself. We should be thankful we didn't get anything worse than Sarbanes-Oxley. In the meantime, the government is using accounting tricks that would make the old Enron execs blush.

" We are on our way somewhere you don't want to go, whether you physically leave or not."

Let me say, Protagoras, that should the United States of America fall into oblivion, you won't want to be in any other country in the world, as they will be darker than the African Continent.

The United States hasn't been going where I wanted it to be going in over 50 years, and this isn't some newly hatched plot.

Look around you. Everyone wants something for nothing.

The government is simply giving the people what they want. More of your tax money.

You can moan and complain, but dems da facks. ;)

"Reform Socialist Security and we would be number 1."

I don't see a mass exodus from these shores. 290,000,000 and rising, and that isn't counting 20,000,000 or so illegal aliens.

The world is full of gloom and doomers.

Can we do better? Certainly. Are we the best there is? Yes we are.

BTW ... you may appreciate this url. It is a history of S/S.

I'll leave the maoning and complaining to others, I merely told you something you apparently didn't want to hear.

As to the other comment, I don't grade on the curve and find no solace that the rest of the world is worse off than we are. Whether that will always be so is a matter of conjecture.

I prefer to work for a return to freedom to the best of my ability.

"I'll leave the maoning and complaining to others, I merely told you something you apparently didn't want to hear."

You were not "moaning and complaining" and I did not mean to insinuate you were, rather that many are doing just that.

As far as you not grading on a curve? Unless you are quite unique, you certainly do. Think of all those things in life you settle for. Were that I did not have to. You may find no solice in that, however I do.

Suffice it to say that I am an American that believes in nationalism, the complete sovereignty of this country, and will always be an American, working for those ideals, first, last and always.

Suffice it to say that I am an American that believes in freedom, limited government, free markets, the rule of law, individual liberty and personal responsibility.

And wherever it is found, I will be happy. I pray that it is here and it's not too late.
