Fox TV's 'Who's Your Daddy?' Draws Low Ratings

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Amid a chorus of protests from child-adoption advocates and sneers from critics, the general reaction of viewers to the controversial Fox special "Who's Your Daddy?" seemed to be "Who Cares?"

The tear-soaked 90-minute special, featuring an attractive young woman picking her biological father from a lineup filled out with impostors, proved to be a ratings flop, according to preliminary figures on Tuesday from Nielsen Media Research.

The Fox show drew a mere 6.3 million viewers, ranking fourth in its Monday night time slot against competing broadcasts on CBS, ABC and NBC. "Daddy" also trailed its Big Three rivals in ratings for its target audience of viewers aged 18 to 49, the group most prized by advertisers.

Critics roundly panned the show as tasteless and exploitative.

It opened with a young woman named T.J., who had been adopted as an infant, being introduced to a panel of eight older men, including her real father. Through three elimination rounds of questioning, the seven pretenders did their best to fool the contestant into thinking they were her true dads.

Some reviews noted the staging in a lavish mansion with lots of candles bore a creepy resemblance to such reality dating shows as "The Bachelor" and "Joe Millionaire."

In the end, however, T.J. prevailed. Weeping through much of the program and dressed for the occasion in a slinky black halter gown, she zeroed in on her real birth father. After granting him forgiveness and a warm embrace, she walked away with a cash prize of $100,000.

And in a final twist at show's end, Daddy presented T.J. with her real birth mother, along with three younger daughters he fathered by his marriage to another woman.

Word of the show before it aired sparked a deluge of letters and e-mail correspondence from adoptees, parents and national adoption organizations branding the program's concept offensive and urging Fox to cancel it. They said the show makes light of the sensitive emotions surrounding adoption.

But producers defended their work, saying all involved were willing and informed participants and they had taken care to conduct the program in a tasteful manner. A Fox spokesman, Scott Grogin, said the network also heard from numerous adoptees "who found the show useful and empowering."

"The past 24 hours, on our Web site, we've gotten dozens of requests from adoptees saying if we do decide to do another show they'd love to be a part of it," Grogin said.

The title of the show alone is sick. Where will these so called reality shows end? Or better yet, When?

The low ratings reveal a trend-the stupider and tackier reality shows aren't doing well. While higher quality reality shows like The Amazing Race are growing in popularity from earlier years, the worse shows aren't catching on. It shows that viewers will watch reality shows but with limits and do have some taste.

The networks will get the message. It's all about the viewer numbers and ad money.

Say, did you hear about the show where people guess which Indiana Pacers player is their father?

It's called Hoosier Daddy.

I agree with most of what you write but I'll say that just because a show is deemed "offensive" doesn't mean it won't do well ratings-wise. Then again, "offensive" is such a subjective description.

Very true. I'm sure tonight's SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIMSUIT MODEL SEARCH will be tacky and offensive. I plan to watch it all the way through just to get a clear idea of exactly how much.

In the MSM and Hollywood, there's sleaze for money and sleaze for the sake of defining deviancy downward, or what is known as "pushing the envelope." In the case of Murdoch, I believe it's sleaze for money. So if it doesn't sell, he'll stop doing it. In the case of other, more perverted bosses, it's sleaze for the sake of spreading deviancy and making things like abortion and the gay lifestyle acceptable. They'll keep doing it even if it doesn't pay.

It's well known that G movies make more money than R movies, but most Hollywood bosses just keeps on making R movies because they want to pervert their audiences.

So the good news is that Fox will probably try some other version of stupid pet tricks that does better in the ratings. Now if it was Eisner and Disney, they would stick to it for at least a year, the way they did with "Nothing Sacred," which was at the very bottom of the ratings for a full year before they finally dropped it.

What channel is that on, so that you may rest assured others out there are being just as offended as you are?

I absolutely love how you are able to discern the difference in motivations between Fox and all the other networks.

Fox is the ONLY one dedicated to making money, and all the others live only to see us wallow in our own perversion. Money means nothing to them, they're bankrolled by evil incarnate, so money means nothing to them.

Where am I supposed to put the sarcasm tag?

Thank god... I mean of course I think the whole premise is so pathetic, but so are alot of other things so no biggie.

But I am SO SICK of 'reality' TV... some of it is good, some it if acceptable for rerun syndication and the other half if useless.

I'm ready for TV execs to get back to work and WRITE THINGS... where are all the sitcom comedies? NO... its all about the 30th revision of CSI or Law&Order drama shows, or stupid reality tv dating shows, or anything reality really.

If I want "reality" TV, I watch the ULTIMATE in Reality TV.. that is REALITY.. the News. I see no use for 'manufactured' "reality" drama when there is so much already existing.

Like any and all TV, if you don't like it, don't watch it.
I watched the last episode, and I didn't think it was offensive- melodramatic soap opera, yes. But in the end everyone was happy and it was actually an interesting story of 2 kids who gave up their baby for adoption at the council of their parents. The young man shipped out with the Marines to 'Nam and each went on with their lives. The father had much regret over the years and it was sweet to see the reunion.
I think they are to be commended for having the baby and at least trying to do the right thing. Of course it would have been better if none of that had happened- but in light of so many kids today opting for abortion maybe it'll make someone think twice.

Anyway it's really not worth the fuss.
My opinion of a really stupid show is Fear Factor, which should just be renamed to Gross-out Factor.

Sorry, but it's not. It's about the promotion of a world view and an attitude. It's about appealling to affluent, single 18-to-35-year-olds, and encouraging them to be drunk, amoral consumerists.

People need food. So there's no point in advertising beef, milk, potatoes, vegetables. Television is paid for by people trying to make sure you buy what rational Christians would not buy. Sure, Beef and Milk have a few memorable ads, but ointments for vaginal yeast infections vastly outnumber both of them.

If you're a responsible father of teenagers, it's worse than that they simply don't care whether you watch their shows. They want to make sure you don't! They want you to be so turned off by their idiocy that you don't see what they are trying to sell to your children.
