Lost Children of Mexico's 'Dirty War'

Woman Believes She Has Found Her Brother in D.C.

For years Aleida Gallangos had been searching for her brother, who disappeared when their family was torn apart 30 years ago during Mexico's war against leftist guerrillas. Last month, the trail led the Mexican factory worker in an unlikely direction -- to Washington.

Gallangos, 31, arrived here with a tantalizing clue: Her brother had been adopted as a young boy by a Mexican family, and some members of that family had immigrated to Columbia Heights. She scoured the Northwest Washington neighborhood and the D.C. phone directory, asking everyone for information about her brother, known as Juan Carlos Hernandez. At 9:30 a.m. Dec. 24, the phone rang in the downtown apartment where Gallangos was staying. "Who are you looking for?" a man asked her.

"I'm looking for my brother. . . . I just want to talk to him and see him," Gallangos replied. She had a feeling about the man's voice, his clipped Mexican Spanish. Finally, she blurted: "Who are you?"

"I am Juan Carlos," he answered.

Wow, imagine that, a mexican in D.C.!  Who'd a thunk.  Damn lucky that family won the immigration lottery and was able to come here and get citizenship, huh?

Why do I get the impression that this woman takes after her parents -- she didn't seem to care who she hurt to achieve her objective.

"Why is it you never read or see a story about the victims of the leftist(aka: communists)?"

Two reasons. They don't tend to leave survivors to tell the story, and also most journalists are sympathetic to Communists. They don't want to believe that Communism is responsible for so much torture and death. When they do encounter it, they ignore it in hopes it will go away.
