No one was poorer than our great grandparents or grandparents who came to this country with only the clothes on their backs... and went on to form a stable family unit with (as a rule) many children.
Difference is, they didn't automatically think about owning a home, having a big wedding, an expensive honeymoon, having nice new furniture, assuming they'd have to educate a kid to the tune of 25k for college each year, etc.
