No, since the UN is not even sincerely trying to redeem itself. The UN has went over critical (passed the point of no return) mass in regards to corruption.

Alliances as in the Balkans/Iraq are the near term future.

Something the Bush/Rumsfeld duo has tried to push for but is blocked by our European allies who are more worried about their little empires is the building up and reorganization of NATO to fill the security voids. In the Balkans NATO worked extremely well. This organization was built with security issues in mind. The habitual working relationships exist and you're dealing with a more select group. Not Iraq which led the WMD commission in the UN or Sudan which led the Human rights commission. There are no banana republics among its ranks and NATO isn’t a farce like the UN has become. Only France, Germany, Russia, China, N. Korea (Some non members still have a say) don’t want to see an expanded role for NATO. France wants its mini-empire, Germany does not want sucked into anything and ride in our shadow without paying a cent, the Russians feel threatened and get uneasy with a power house like NATO and any issue which expands its boundaries or scope of power. N. Korea and China are self explanatory.

To me NATO is the only viable long term fix though. The UN is the humanitarian side, the forum where issues are dealt with and all agree on things like international law etc. NATO should be the battle ax. Again, their mission statement is security and they have experience, are led by competent people, have the appropriate architecture and the will to wage war. The UN (Look at their weapons inspectors) don’t want to be the ones responsible for causing a war. Hans Blix was going to close both eyes, ears and say nothing, since if he finds something in Iraq it may be the cause for further action. Something he nor the organization he’s a part of wanted, despite the fact that Iraq was in BLATENT violation in 35 areas of two treaties over 11 years, had no true intent to conform and was proven guilty even in the opening hours of the war when they fired missiles Iraq denied they had. Even when iraq was caught red handed with long range missiles it was none other than the Chief Weapons inspector for the UN Hans Blix who downplayed the significance. Then Iraq proceeded to mock the UN by destroying these missiles at a rate of 1 or 2 per week. Each missile destroyed was an individual media event. It was a joke, and Blix himself was part of it. But after the war began, Blix was fast to jump on the no WMD bandwagon, why? They were against the war to begin with. Blix while not pro Iraqi was surely against any conflict and was not going to be the one to feed the issue any ammunition. Though nobel, that was NOT what his job was. Why do I harp on this? It's just another example of how the UN operates and fails in security issues. The UN is NOT capable of meeting security needs of anyone, not even those in Rowanda, Sudan, Bosnia or anywhere else. In security issues they fail EVERY time except those operations where they just hand wave their blessing but someone else does all the dirty work. Example-Balkans, Korean defense, Iraq 1991........

"Can the UN be redeemed?"

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! ROFL!!!!!!

Maybe after it gets a session with a plunger, followed by a massive application from Rotor-Rooter, concluded by a total fumigation.

Otherwise.....not only no, but **** no! Shut it down, kick it out of the USA, and send it to Paris, Pyongyang, Tehran, Damascus, or similar garden spots of "enlightenment" and "good will." UN = Useless Nags

No, the UN cannot be redeemed. Get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US.
