I don't want the government to be more effective, I find the idea frightening
I want an effective governnent, personally. Not big, not overpowering or intrusive, and not weak. The schema was for a strong, limited government which would achieve a balance between anarchy and despostism. Both parties seem to want to swing the balance out of kilter one way or the other, usually both, depending upon the need du jour.
*Note this is not to be interpretted as meaning I want "them" to be able to do "anything it takes" to make us secure - that is not how I define effective.
