So they are no longer going to use their 5 pirated copies of Windows. Guess that ruins Gate's/Balmer's new year.

China and some European countries seem to favor Linux as well.

I'd say it was annoying that ONLY socialist countries use open source, while our government is firmly in Gates' back pocket running the most insecure operating system ever developed in human history.

It'll be ironic when the commies make more use out of SELinux than our own government.

Indeed. I've been looking at SELinux. I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the security contexts and modes. The whole schema of how things work in SELinux is pretty out there. Personally, I think you'd go farther with a proper implementation with ACLs from the ground up because they are better understood by the Unix community.

Actually, "farther" is probably not the right word, as a system running SELinux can be locked down so tightly as to become pretty much unusable. I'm not really sure where SELinux comes in as a system except in cases of extreme paranoia. If you just want a good, reliable, hardened server, BSD is a good all-around choice, that is both relatively easy to administer, yet has been proven to be extraordinarily secure for a OOTB distribution.

I didn't think that Gates forced anyone to use Windows. When did that happen?

Who said he did? Re-read what I said.

He didn't force anyone to use it, but it required a fair amount of litigation in that lil' ol' legal matter of US vs. Microsoft that removed some under-handed tactics that they employed with regards to OEM installations.

People got refunds of that forced Microsoft "tax" on computers that they did NOT want WINDOWS on -and were issued refunds.

Yes, and you could point pistol at own foot and pull trigger, but why would you do such a silly thing?

Selinux is quite nice in most businesses and government facilities when set up with any one of several recommended recipies which are freely available.

These leave the machine very useable for its intended purpose, but pretty much lock out any possibility of any mal-ware being installed or snooping taking place.

You are right that it is different than normal linux permissions (which all by themselves go WAY beyond what windows has), but they are not dis-similar to ACLs in concept.

"I didn't think that Gates forced anyone to use Windows. When did that happen?"

Now there's the BS post of the year(it's still early lol)

Go to the average computer user and ask them why they use Windows. I did just that and you will see the odd blank stares you get. Most of the time it's an answer like: "I don't know", or "well that's what came with my computer", and sometimes "well that's what everyone else uses". Also, ask the 'average computer user why they use Internet Explorer, it gets even better.

Windows is a piss poor computer culture....some consider it a monopoly(I don't) forced on unaware people by computer manufacturers.

PS: If you use Windoze keep your antivirus software updated. lol @ you.

Find any good book on unix permissions and you will see.

This is one of the reasons its virtually impossible to write a virus for linux, unless you can socially engineer the user into setting it executable.

The exact details of trying to get a refund -at that time- likely did vary by country and jurisdiction. If your State Attorney took up the matter (like many states did) you most certainly had more of an advantage than other States.

You still had a maze of other obstacles to go thru, IIRC.

Your friends would have been further ahead to just blow away the WIN crap and install any Linux flavor of their choice -and don't look back ;)

There are many free democratic countries that are embracing Linux too. Spain, for one.

As WINDOWS users (myself, at times), we should all be THRILLED that we are supporting and subsidizing Microsoft's lower cost products to third world countries (like WinXP LITE Edition -cost$30) and yes -even SOCIALIST countries.

There pricing structure must be a real maze, as Balmer himself has said that they WILL DO ANYTHING to stop further market erosion of Microsoft products and services to LINUX.

Paying full price for a schlock OS that they strip even further to resell to poor unfortunates is Robin Hood at its finest.

Guess where some of the finest Linux development work and distros along with real-time applications (used in consumer electronics goods) are coming from now...

-China....

Communists support Linux!

So do capitalists. Like IBM, Novell, SUN, RedHat, HP, Dell, and every fortune 500 company you've ever heard of.

Dismiss it at your peril.
